Chapter 5 - The Collapse of the Empire

Minute three.
The phone calls on Adrian’s mobile finally stopped ringing, replaced by an even more terrifying silence. Then, a single, sharp notification chime pinged from his device.
Slowly, mechanically, Adrian reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone. His hands shook so violently he almost dropped the device onto the floor. He unlocked the screen with trembling fingers.
It was an email from the Board of Directors of Mercer Dynamics.
Subject: EMERGENCY: Termination of CEO and Asset Seizure.
Adrian’s eyes scanned the text, his breath hitching in his throat as every word burned into his retinas:
Mr. Mercer,
Effective immediately, the Board of Directors has unanimously voted to strip you of your title as Chief Executive Officer, Chairman, and voting shareholder of Mercer Dynamics.
All corporate credit cards, executive accounts, real estate holdings under corporate title, and personal assets have been placed under federal receivership pursuant to an emergency asset-freezing order initiated by Ellison Global Holdings.
You are no longer permitted within five hundred meters of any Mercer Dynamics facility.
Good luck, The Board.
Adrian stared at the screen, his mouth hanging open, a low, animalistic whimper escaping his throat. “No... no, no, no! This isn't real! I built this! I spent fifteen years building this company from a two-man garage into a global powerhouse! You can’t just take it away! You can’t!”
He threw the phone across the room. It shattered against the marble fireplace, the battery popping out across the hearth.
Vanessa crawled across the floor, grabbing onto Adrian’s trouser leg like a drowning sailor clinging to driftwood. “Adrian! Make it stop! Call your contacts! Call the politicians we bribed! Do something!”
Adrian looked down at her—the woman he had chosen over his wife, the mistress who had whispered poison into his ear and orchestrated the forged documents to frame Claire. The woman who was currently wearing Claire’s silk robe.
A sudden, blinding rage surged through Adrian. All his fear momentarily evaporated, replaced by a violent, pathetic desperation.
“You!” Adrian roared, standing up and pointing a trembling finger down at Vanessa. “This is your fault! You told me she leaked the files! You planted those forged emails on her computer!”
Vanessa recoiled, her eyes flashing with defensive terror. “I—I only did what you wanted! You wanted an excuse to divorce her without giving her a dime of the settlement! You wanted her out of the way!”
“You bitch!” Adrian lunged forward, grabbing Vanessa by the collar of Claire’s emerald-green silk robe and hauling her to her feet. “You ruined me! You whispered in my ear every single day telling me she was a liability!”
“Stop it! Let go of me, you lunatic!” Vanessa screamed, clawing at his face, leaving three angry red gouges across his cheek.
Claire stood entirely still, watching the two people who had conspired to destroy her tear each other apart in the ruins of their own greed. She didn’t smile. She didn't gloat. She simply watched with the cold, detached satisfaction of a surgeon observing a cancer excise itself.
Minute four was ticking away.
The heavy oak front door of the Mercer estate—a solid-core security door equipped with biometric locks and steel deadbolts—suddenly exploded inward with a deafening CRACK.
Splintered wood and shattered brass hardware flew across the marble-tiled foyer as six men in black tactical gear, wearing unmarked matte helmets and carrying high-tech security breaching tools, poured into the house like a black tide.
Adrian and Vanessa froze, releasing each other and spinning around in sheer panic as the tactical unit flooded the hallway and fanned out through the study.
The lead operator—a massive man with a jagged scar over his left eyebrow and cold, dead eyes—stepped into the center of the study. He ignored Adrian entirely, marched straight up to Claire, and dropped instantly onto one knee, pressing his fist to his chest in a crisp, military salute.
“Miss Ellison,” the operator barked, his voice flat and professional. “Extraction and containment team Alpha is on site. Perimeter secured. All domestic and international accounts belonging to Adrian Mercer have been successfully locked and transferred to the Ellison Trust.”
Adrian’s knees gave out completely. He collapsed backward into the armchair, staring at the tactical team as if he had lost his mind.
Claire looked down at the operator, her face an unreadable mask of authority.
“Is my father’s transport ready?” she asked.
“Yes, ma’–m,” the operator replied, standing up. “A private chopper is waiting on the rooftop helipad. Mr. Ellison is currently patched through on the secure satellite channel. He wants to speak with you.”
The operator held out a heavy, encrypted satellite handset, offering it to Claire with both hands.

Claire reached out, took the device, and held it to her ear.
“Dad,” she said softly.
