Chapter 7 - The Inheritance of Ashes

Vanessa Vale stood frozen against the bookshelf, realizing with terrifying clarity that she was completely, utterly alone. The man she had manipulated, the billionaire CEO whose coattails she had ridden to the top of Chicago’s social scene, was now a penniless nobody sitting in a puddle of his own tears.
She looked toward the door, hoping to slip away into the night while the tactical team was distracted.
“Where do you think you’re going, Miss Vale?”
The cold, flat voice belonged to the lead tactical operator, who stepped directly into her path, blocking the exit.
Vanessa swallowed hard, forcing a brittle, desperate smile onto her face. “There’s been a mistake! I’m just an independent consultant! I didn't do anything! Adrian forced me to help him! He threatened me!”
“Liar!” Adrian shrieked from the armchair, his head snapping up, his face contorted with murderous hatred. “You wrote the forged emails! You were the one who pushed me to frame her! You wanted her out so you could take her place as Mrs. Mercer!”
“Shut up, you pathetic piece of trash!” Vanessa screamed, lunging toward Adrian with her fingernails bared, abandoning all pretense of corporate professionalism.
Before she could reach him, two tactical operators moved with lightning speed. They grabbed Vanessa by her arms, twisting her wrists behind her back with mechanical efficiency and slapping a pair of heavy, black steel zip-ties around her wrists.
“Aargh! Let me go! Do you know who I am?! I demand to speak to my lawyer!” Vanessa shrieked, kicking her high heels against the marble floor.
“Your lawyer just dropped you too, Miss Vale,” Claire said calmly as she walked past her toward the shattered front door. “Along with every corporate client on your roster. My father’s legal team filed federal wire fraud and forgery charges against you three minutes ago. The arrest warrant was signed by a federal judge before you finished your glass of scotch.”
Vanessa went completely limp in the operators' grip, her eyes rolling back in horror as the reality of her prison sentence began to sink in.
Claire didn’t look back at her. She stepped out into the grand foyer, her bare feet pressing against the cool marble tile. The night air rushed in through the splintered front door, carrying the crisp, clean scent of approaching autumn rain.
Outside, the rooftop helipad’s strobe lights flashed a rhythmic red and white against the dark sky, casting long, dramatic shadows across the manicured lawns of the estate that Adrian had called his kingdom just an hour ago.
Vance, Claire’s loyal personal assistant—the only person in Chicago outside of her father who knew her true identity and had maintained a quiet, undercover watch over her for three years—was waiting by the threshold with a heavy woolen coat and a pair of soft leather slippers.
“Miss Ellison,” Vance said respectfully, his voice steady as he draped the warm coat over her bruised shoulders. “The medical transport is waiting on the lower pad, and your father’s private physician is on standby.”
Claire slipped her arms into the sleeves of the coat, pulling the fabric tight around her chest to ward off the chill. She looked down at her bleeding, battered hand, flexing her fingers slowly. The pain was sharp, but it felt grounding—a physical reminder that she had survived.
“How many assets are left unattached, Vance?” Claire asked quietly.
“None, Miss Ellison,” Vance replied smoothly, pulling a tablet from his coat pocket. “As of twelve minutes ago, Mercer Dynamics, its subsidiaries, its intellectual property, and all personal holdings of Adrian Mercer have been fully absorbed by Ellison Global Holdings. The board has been dissolved, and the liquidation auctions are scheduled for Monday morning.”
Claire gave a slow, deliberate nod. “And the house?”

“Foreclosed and transferred to public domain. The city has already approved our petition to convert this estate into a shelter for displaced women and children.”
A faint, ghostly smile touched Claire’s lips. It was a fitting end for a place built on lies, cruelty, and arrogance. Let the victims of domestic abuse and corporate greed take shelter in the halls where Adrian Mercer had once fancied himself a god.
