Chapter 4 - The Sinking Ship

Minute two ticked away with agonizing slowness.
The private desk phone continued to wail, a relentless electronic shriek that seemed to mock Adrian’s entire existence. Other lines were beginning to light up now—his mobile phone in his pocket started vibrating furiously, buzzing against his thigh like an angry hornet’s nest, ringing over and over with calls from board members, major shareholders, and panic-stricken vice presidents.
Adrian didn’t answer it. He couldn't. His fingers were too numb to reach into his pocket.
“Who... who are you?” Adrian whispered, his voice cracking into a high, hysterical pitch as he stared at Claire. The formidable CEO, the untouchable titan of Chicago’s underworld of high finance, looked like a cornered animal realizing the cage door was lined with razor wire.
Claire didn’t answer immediately. She took one slow step forward, her bare feet making no sound on the rug. The blood from her split palm had dried into a dark, ugly stain, but she didn't seem to notice the pain anymore.
“You asked me who my father was,” Claire said, her voice soft, carrying a lethal, melodic cadence. “You thought he was a retired high school teacher living on a pension in Ohio. You thought my maiden name—Hart—was just a simple, ordinary name.”
Vanessa backed away until her spine hit the mahogany bookshelf, her hands clamped over her mouth. “Adrian... make her stop. Call your security. Have them throw her out!”
“Security?” Adrian laughed—a frantic, broken sound that sounded more like weeping. “Look at the monitors, Vanessa! Look at the monitors!”
With trembling fingers, Adrian pointed a shaking hand toward the wall-mounted flatscreen television in the corner of the study, which was usually tuned to Bloomberg or CNBC.
The screen was flashing red.
The financial news ticker at the bottom of the screen was scrolling in bold, crimson letters:
BREAKING: MERCER DYNAMICS SHARES HALTED AFTER CATASTROPHIC 70% CRASH; FEDERAL INVESTIGATORS RAID MAIN CHICAGO HEADQUARTERS; ASSETS FROZEN BY FEDERAL RESERVE.
“The Feds,” Vanessa whispered, sliding down the bookshelf until she hit the floor. “The Feds are raiding us? Why? On whose authority? We didn't do anything illegal!”
“You didn't,” Claire agreed, tilting her head. “But my father did.”
Adrian lunged forward, grabbing the edge of the desk, his eyes bloodshot and bulging. “Your father! Who the hell is your father?! What kind of retired teacher has the pull to freeze a multi-billion-dollar corporation in two minutes?!”
Claire stopped five feet away from him. She looked down at him with an expression of profound, crushing pity—the kind of look one might give an ant crawling across a sidewalk before a falling boot.
“My father’s name isn’t Hart,” Claire said quietly. “Hart is my mother’s maiden name. She used it to shield me from the predators of the world—the men who only care about family crests, trust funds, and net worth.”
Adrian’s breath hitched. A cold sweat broke out across his forehead, plastering his styled hair to his skin. “No... no, that’s impossible. You’re... you’re just Claire. My wife.”
“My full name is Claire Ellison,” she said, her voice dropping like a guillotine blade. “And my father is Jonathan Ellison.”
The name hit the room like a sonic boom.
Jonathan Ellison. The patriarch of Ellison Global Holdings. The man who owned shipping ports across three continents, controlled major stakes in international banking cartels, and whose private net worth was casually estimated to be larger than the GDP of several small European nations. He was the invisible hand that moved markets, toppled foreign governments, and crushed corporate empires with a single phone call to his legal syndicate.
Adrian staggered backward, his legs buckling until the back of his knees hit the leather armchair. He collapsed into it, staring up at Claire as if she were a ghost rising from an open grave.

“Ellison...” Adrian choked out, the name tasting like ash in his mouth. “The... the Ellison syndicate? The private equity titan that owns half of New York and Zurich?”
“He owns Chicago too, Adrian,” Claire said calmly. “He just didn't care to look at it until you threatened his daughter.”
