Chapter 2 - THE SEEDS OF DECEIT

The night air was freezing as Claire buckled Noah and Emma into the back of her dented sedan.

Emma sniffled into her jacket sleeve, holding a small stuffed bear, while Noah stared silently out the window at Vanessa's illuminated estate.

"Mom," Noah murmured, his voice tiny. "Why does Aunt Vanessa hate us?"

Claire paused, her hands resting on the steering wheel. Her heart physically ache for her son. She turned around in her seat, looking at her two small children.

"Aunt Vanessa doesn't hate you, sweetie," Claire said softly, though the lie felt heavy on her tongue. "She is insecure. And sometimes, when people feel small inside, they try to make others feel smaller so they can feel big."

"I didn't mean to spill the juice," Emma whimpered.

"I know, baby," Claire stroked Emma's hair. "It was an accident. And you never, ever deserve to be treated like that. Not by anyone."

Claire started the engine and backed out of the long asphalt driveway. In her rearview mirror, the grand marble pillars of her sister's mansion receded into the dark pine forest.

Six years ago, Vanessa had married Richard Sterling, a wealthy heir to a regional logistics firm. From that moment, Vanessa's personality had shifted. She erased her past as a middle-class girl from Ohio, constructing an image of refined perfection. She wore designer wool coats, hosted high-society luncheons, and treated Claire like a charity project.

Claire had endured it for years. She had accepted the hand-me-down clothes that were two sizes too small, the subtle insults about her modest apartment, and the pitying looks at holiday dinners. Claire had stayed quiet for the sake of their aging mother, Evelyn.

Until tonight.

Tonight, Vanessa had targeted two innocent children.

As Claire drove toward the highway, her phone lit up on the dashboard.

Evelyn Bennett Calling.

Claire hit the speaker button. "Mom."

"Claire! Where are you?" Evelyn's voice came through the car speakers, trembling with distress. "You shouldn't have walked out like that! You made a scene in front of Richard's business associates!"

Claire gripped the steering wheel so tightly her knuckles turned white. "Mom, she put my children's food in dog bowls. She forced Noah and Emma to sit on the floor in front of twenty strangers."

"She said it was a joke!" Evelyn argued, though her voice lacked conviction. "Vanessa said she was just trying to teach them manners! You know how strict she is about her hardwood floors!"

"It wasn't a joke, Mom. It was cruelty," Claire said, her voice dropping into a razor-sharp tone. "And if you defended her tonight, then you are part of the problem."

"Claire, please," Evelyn sobbed softly. "Don't do this to our family. What was in that white envelope? Vanessa won't speak to anyone. She locked herself in her bedroom and Richard is furious! What did you give her?"

Claire looked at the dark highway stretching out ahead of her headlights.

"I gave her a birth certificate, Mom," Claire said quietly. "And a photo taken six years ago at Saint Jude's Children's Hospital."

Silence fell over the line.

Evelyn stopped crying instantly. Her breathing became shallow, terrified.

"Where... where did you get that?" Evelyn whispered.

"I found it in Dad's old filing cabinet in the attic last week," Claire answered. "The cabinet you told me to clear out before you put the old house up for sale. You knew, didn't you, Mom?"

"Claire, don't talk about this on the phone—"

"You knew Vanessa had a daughter before she met Richard!" Claire demanded, her voice cracking with suppressed anger. "You knew she placed the child in an unregistered private guardianship six years ago so Richard's aristocratic family wouldn't break off the engagement!"

"It wasn't like that!" Evelyn cried out. "Vanessa was terrified! Richard's mother had already told her that if she had any baggage—any past scandals—the marriage was off! Vanessa sacrificed her happiness for her future!"

"She didn't sacrifice her happiness," Claire said coldly, tears spilling over her eyelashes. "She abandoned her daughter, Mom. She abandoned a little girl named Lily. And for six years, you helped her hide it while you let me believe my sister was just an ambitious woman."

"Claire, if Richard finds out, he'll divorce her!" Evelyn pleaded desperate. "He'll strip her of everything! He'll leave her penniless!"

"Then she should have thought about that before she put my children's food in dog bowls," Claire said.

She hung up the phone.
