Chapter 6 - FLIGHT TO EVANSTON

Claire spent the evening arranging care for Noah and Emma. Her trusted neighbor, an elderly retired schoolteacher, agreed to watch the children for two days.

At 6:00 AM on Friday, Claire boarded a flight to Chicago.

The weather over the Midwest was turbulent, gray clouds heavy with rain. Sitting in the narrow window seat of the commercial jet, Claire stared down at the farmland below, holding the photograph of Lily tight in her lap.

She thought about her childhood with Vanessa.

Growing up, Vanessa had always been the golden child—the prettiest, the most popular, the one who excelled in school. Their mother had poured all her hopes into Vanessa, while Claire was expected to be the sensible, quiet helper.

When their father fell ill seven years ago, it was Claire who moved back home to care for him, feeding him meals and managing his medications, while Vanessa was in New York attending high-society parties.

Vanessa had built a life on an elaborate foundation of lies, pretending to be a flawless princess, while stepping on anyone who threatened her illusion.

By 10:00 AM, Claire stepped out of a taxi in front of a charming two-story craftsman house in Evanston, Illinois.

The front yard was filled with colorful children's toys, a small wooden swing hanging from an oak tree, and flower boxes blooming with yellow pansies.

The front door opened before Claire reached the steps.

Sarah Jenkins stepped out—a woman in her late forties with warm brown eyes and a motherly presence.

"Claire," Sarah said, reaching out to wrap Claire in a warm, genuine embrace. "Thank you for coming so fast."

"Where is she?" Claire asked softly.

"She's at her morning art class," Sarah replied, leading Claire inside the warm, sunlit house. "She'll be home in an hour. But your sister is already here."

Claire froze in the entryway. "Vanessa is here?"

"She arrived thirty minutes ago," Sarah said, pointing toward the sunroom at the back of the house. "She's waiting for her attorney to arrive from New York."

Claire walked down the hardwood hallway toward the sunroom.

Sitting on a wicker couch, staring out at the rain-soaked garden, was Vanessa. She was wearing an oversized black trench coat, clutching a leather briefcase in her lap. She looked exhausted, her cheeks sunken, her hair pulled back into a tight, messy knot.

When the sunroom door clicked open, Vanessa turned around.

When she saw Claire, she stood up instantly, her face twisting with rage and fear.

"What are you doing here?" Vanessa hissed, dropping her briefcase onto the floor. "Did you follow me?"

"I'm here to stop you from destroying another life, Vanessa," Claire said calmly, closing the sunroom door behind her.

"This is my child!" Vanessa shouted, her voice trembling with hysteria. "You have no right to interfere!"

"Your child?" Claire laughed dryly, a sound devoid of humor. "You told her you were her aunt! You paid a woman to raise her in secret while you lived in luxury! You don't get to claim her as 'your child' only when it's convenient for your survival!"

"I'm her mother!" Vanessa screamed, tears bursting from her eyes. "I gave birth to her! I paid every single bill! I am sending her to a prestigious academy in Switzerland where she will have the best education in the world!"

"You're shipping her to Switzerland so Richard's investigators can't find her!" Claire countered, stepping right up to her sister. "You don't care about her education! You care about your marriage to a millionaire!"

Vanessa shrank back against the window frame, covering her face as she sobbed uncontrollably.

"It's over, Vanessa," Claire whispered softly. "The lie has grown too big. You can't run from this anymore."
