Chapter 7 - THE CONFRONTATION AT THE ESTATE

Before Vanessa could reply, the heavy oak front door of the Evanston house slammed open.
Heavy, deliberate footsteps echoed through the hallway.
Sarah Jenkins walked into the sunroom, her face pale. "Claire... there is someone else here."
Stepping into the sunroom behind Sarah was Richard Sterling.
Beside him walked a tall, elderly man with sharp gray eyes and an authoritative posture—Arthur Sterling, Richard's father and the founding partner of the most powerful corporate law firm in the state.
Vanessa gasped, dropping to her knees on the wicker rug as if she had been shot. "Richard... Arthur..."
Richard didn't look at his wife. His eyes swept across the sunroom, taking in Sarah Jenkins, the child's drawings hanging on the refrigerator, and finally settling on Claire.
"Claire," Richard said quietly. "My private investigator tracked Vanessa's charter flight this morning."
Arthur Sterling stepped forward, his cold gray eyes fixing on Vanessa kneeling on the floor.
"Get up, Vanessa," Arthur commanded, his voice like iron sliding against stone. "You look pathetic."
Vanessa tried to stand, her hands shaking so badly she had to hold onto the wicker couch for support. "Arthur... please... let me explain—"
"Explain what?" Arthur snapped, pulling a thick folder of financial documents from his leather briefcase and tossing it onto the glass coffee table. "Explain how you embezzled eighty thousand dollars from the Sterling Charitable Foundation over four years to cover private payments to an unregistered guardianship agency?"
Richard turned to his father, surprised. "She took money from the foundation?"
"She certainly did," Arthur said coldly. "She thought our accountants wouldn't notice minor monthly disbursements under four thousand dollars. But when my son came to me two days ago mentioning Chicago, I had our audit team review every ledger connected to her name."
Arthur turned back to Vanessa, his expression filled with absolute disgust. "You didn't just hide an illegitimate child from my family, Vanessa. You committed grand larceny against our foundation to keep your secret buried."
"I did it for Richard!" Vanessa cried out, reaching toward her husband. "I loved you, Richard! I knew your father would never allow you to marry me if he knew I had a child!"
Richard looked down at his wife with profound sadness and disappointment.
"I wouldn't have cared about the child, Vanessa," Richard said softly, his voice cracking with emotion. "If you had been honest with me six years ago, I would have accepted her. We could have adopted her legally. We could have raised her together."
Vanessa stared at him, stunned. "What?"
"I loved you, Vanessa," Richard said, tears filling his eyes. "I didn't marry you for a pristine reputation. I married you because I thought you were a good, loving woman. But you lied to me every single day of our marriage. You abandoned your own daughter... and then you treated Claire's children like animals to hide your own shame."
May you like
Richard pulled his wedding ring from his finger and set it quietly on the glass table beside the embezzlement audit.
"It's over, Vanessa," Richard said.
