Chapter 8 - LILY’S EYES

The front door opened again, accompanied by the bright, cheerful laughter of a child.

"Sarah! Look at the picture I painted!" a sweet, high-pitched voice called out from the hallway.

Everyone in the sunroom went completely silent.

Sarah Jenkins quickly wiped her face and stepped out into the hallway. "That's beautiful, sweetheart! Why don't you take your boots off in the kitchen?"

Small, light footsteps approached the sunroom door.

A little girl stepped into the doorway, holding a watercolor painting of a sun and a green tree. She was six years old, wearing a yellow raincoat, with bouncy dark curls and bright hazel eyes.

Lily.

She looked around the sunroom, her eyes darting from Arthur Sterling's sharp suit to Richard's sad face, then to Vanessa standing frozen by the window, and finally settling on Claire.

Lily tilted her head, looking at Claire with curious, innocent eyes.

"Hello," Lily said politely.

Claire felt a wave of overwhelming tenderness flood her heart. She dropped to her knees on the rug so she was at eye level with the little girl.

"Hello, Lily," Claire said softly, her voice filled with warmth. "My name is Claire."

Lily stepped closer, looking at Claire's face carefully. "You have the same eyes as Aunt Vanessa."

Claire smiled gently, a tear rolling down her cheek. "I'm your Aunt Claire, sweetie. I'm your mother's sister."

Lily's eyes widened with delight. "Another aunt? Do you live in New York too?"

"I live nearby," Claire said softly, reaching out to gently touch Lily's small hand. "And I came here today because I wanted to meet you."

Behind Claire, Vanessa let out a strangled sob, covering her mouth as she fell back onto the couch.

Lily looked over at Vanessa with concern. "Aunt Vanessa? Why are you crying? Did you hurt your knee?"

Vanessa looked at her daughter—the daughter she had denied, hidden, and tried to ship across the ocean—and for the first time in six years, the terrifying reality of her choices broke through her cold shell.

Vanessa couldn't speak. The weight of her shame was too heavy.

Richard stepped forward, kneeling beside Claire and looking at Lily with gentle kindness.

"Hi, Lily," Richard said softly. "My name is Richard."

Lily looked at the tall man in the nice suit. "Are you Aunt Vanessa's husband?"

"I was," Richard said gently, offering the little girl a soft, reassuring smile. "And I'm someone who is going to make sure you are always safe and loved."

Arthur Sterling watched the scene from the doorway. The old, hardened corporate lawyer took a deep breath, his sharp eyes softening just a fraction as he looked at the innocent child who shared his family's tangled story.

"Richard," Arthur said quietly, stepping out into the hallway. "A word outside."
