Chapter 10 - The Clean Horizon

Six months after the wedding that was supposed to trap me, the morning sun broke brightly over the coastal hills of Puerto Vallarta.

I stood on the wide wooden terrace of my brand-new oceanfront interior design studio, holding a warm cup of coffee in my hands. The salt air was fresh, clean, and completely free from the stench of grease and dried chili.

My new business, Whitmore Design & Consulting, had launched two months prior using a portion of my recovered trust capital. We specialized in renovating historic commercial properties across the coast, turning old, neglected spaces into vibrant, beautiful places of life.

A sleek white SUV pulled into the driveway, and my parents stepped out, smiling warmly as they walked up the stone steps toward the terrace.

"Morning, CEO," my father called out proudly, wrapping me in a warm bear hug.

"Morning, Dad," I laughed, kissing his cheek. "How was the drive?"

"Perfect," my mother said, placing a bouquet of fresh yellow lilies on the patio table. "Your father hasn't stopped bragging about your new resort contract to everyone at the marina."

We sat together on the sunny patio, listening to the gentle crash of the ocean waves below.

My phone chimed on the table with a news alert from Guadalajara: Former Executive Patrick Reyes Begins Nine-Year Sentence; Reyes Construction Liquidation Completed.

I looked at the notification for a second, then simply swiped it away into the digital void. The past was completely behind me, burned away like fog under the morning sun.

"Are you happy, Melanie?" my mother asked gently, holding my hand across the table.

I looked out at the vast, sparkling blue horizon stretching as far as the eye could see—a world where I owed nothing to anyone, where my dignity was entirely my own, and where no one would ever tell me to clean up someone else's mess again.

I smiled, taking a warm sip of my coffee.

"I've never been happier, Mom," I said softly. "The air is completely clean."
