Chapter 4 - The Table Turns

The silence in the apartment hallway was deafening.

Brandon stared at his father in absolute horror. "Dad... what is he talking about? What tax commission?"

"Shut up, Brandon!" Patrick snapped, his forehead glistening with a sudden layer of cold sweat.

Detective Vargas closed his notepad, his demeanor shifting instantly from aggressive officer to cautious investigator. "Mr. Reyes, you stated in your sworn report thirty minutes ago that $650,000 in physical cash and bearer bonds were stolen from your home safe tonight."

"Yes! They were!" Patrick insisted, trying to regain his composure.

"Then why does the State Tax Commission have a certified digital trail showing those exact funds were wired from your corporate account into Banco Nacional six days ago as an escrow deposit?" Vargas asked, his eyes narrowing. "Filing a false felony report is a federal offense, sir."

I stepped out into the doorway, standing face-to-face with Brandon.

"You thought I was just a quiet girl who would clean your kitchen and scrub your shirts by hand," I said, my voice cutting through the hall like a razor. "You thought my family's quietness was weakness. But my father didn't spend thirty years auditing corrupt construction firms without learning how men like your father operate."

Brandon backed away, looking at me as if he were seeing a complete stranger. "Melanie... we can talk about this... in private..."

"There is nothing left to talk about, Brandon," I said. "You threw a rag in my face this morning and told me I was your family's maid. Tonight, your family's financial empire begins to collapse."

Detective Vargas turned to his junior officers. "Cancel the search warrant. Mr. Reyes, Mr. Brandon Reyes, you are coming down to the station with us to clarify the statements in your affidavit."

"What?!" Brenda screeched from the elevator hall, having followed them up. "You can't arrest my husband! She stole our money! She's our daughter-in-law!"

"I am nobody's maid," I said quietly, stepping back inside the apartment.

Jessica slammed the door shut, locking all three deadbolts.

Through the heavy wood, we heard the sound of handcuffs clicking shut, followed by Brenda's desperate, screeching cries echoing down the stairwell.

Jessica turned to me, her hands over her mouth in disbelief. "Melanie... what did your father do?"

I walked back to the coffee table, picked up my laptop, and looked at the screen. "My father didn't do anything illegal. He simply let Patrick Reyes dig his own grave."
