Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

"You knew?" Brandon whispered, his voice cracking as he looked at me across the conference table. "You knew all of this before the wedding?"

"I suspected it three weeks ago when my father showed me the initial audit discrepancies," I replied smoothly. "I gave you the benefit of the doubt, Brandon. I thought maybe you were innocent. I thought maybe you genuinely loved me, and that we could build a real life far away from your father's corruption."

I leaned forward, placing my hands flat on the glass table.

"That's why I stood at that altar yesterday," I said softly. "I was willing to give you a chance to prove you were a good man. But this morning, when you threw that filthy dishcloth in my face and told me I was nothing more than a servant for your family, you showed me exactly who you were."

Brandon looked down at his hands, tears of pure shame welling in his eyes. "Melanie... please... I didn't mean it... my mother told me I had to establish authority early..."

"Establish authority?" my mother spoke up for the first time, her voice dripping with absolute contempt. "You treated my daughter like an animal in your home, and now you want mercy?"

Patrick's attorney leaned over, whispered urgently into Patrick's ear for thirty seconds, and then closed his briefcase.

"My client has no further comment," the attorney declared grimly. "We will be departing."

"I wouldn't recommend leaving the building just yet, counselor," Julian Mercer noted, checking his watch. "The District Attorney's financial crimes unit was scheduled to execute a search warrant on Reyes Construction's main office at 8:30 AM. It is currently 8:32 AM."

Right on cue, Patrick's cell phone began ringing frantically on the table. The screen displayed: OFFICE MANAGER - URGENT.

Patrick didn't answer it. He simply stared at the phone as it vibrated against the glass like a dying insect.

"Your commercial assets are seized, Patrick," my father said quietly, closing his folder. "The $200,000 my wife and I deposited into Melanie's trust has been legally recovered. The $450,000 you attempted to launder is now in federal custody."

I stood up from my chair, smoothing the skirt of my tailored suit.

"You wanted a maid, Brandon," I said, looking down at my ex-fiancé one last time. "Now you can clean up your own family's mess."
