Chapter 3 - The Doorbell at Midnight

At 11:45 PM, the quiet street outside Jessica's apartment was shattered by the flashing blue and red lights of three police cruisers.

I was sitting in Jessica's living room, sipping hot tea while reviewing my father's corporate audit files on my laptop, when heavy knocks rattled the front door.

"Police! Open up!" a harsh voice boomed from the hallway.

Jessica looked at me in terror. "Melanie... what did they do?"

"Stay behind me, Jess," I said calmly, adjusting my sweater as I walked to the door and pulled it open.

Two armed officers stood outside, flanked by Brandon and his father, Patrick. Brandon was holding a folder of printed documents, looking at me with a sickening mixture of triumph and spite.

"That's her, Officer," Brandon declared, pointing a finger directly at my face. "Melanie Whitaker. She walked out of my house this morning with a leather briefcase containing $650,000 in bearer bonds and cash belonging to my family's business estate."

The lead officer, Detective Vargas, stepped forward, his hand resting casually on his holster. "Ma'am, we have a grand larceny report filed by Mr. Reyes. We need you to come down to the station for questioning, and we have a search warrant for these premises."

Jessica stepped up beside me, her voice trembling with outrage. "This is insane! She didn't steal anything! They threw a greasy rag in her face and forced her out!"

"Be quiet, girl," Patrick warned coldly, crossing his arms. "Melanie, if you hand over the account keys and sign the transfer authorization right now, I'll tell the officers it was a misunderstanding. If not, you're going to jail."

I looked at Brandon. The man I had stood beside at the altar twenty-four hours ago was smiling, convinced he had backed me into a corner where I would break, cry, and submit.

I didn't cry. I didn't tremble. I simply pulled my phone from my pocket and dialed a number on speed dial.

"Who are you calling?" Detective Vargas asked sternly.

"My legal counsel," I answered, putting the phone on speaker.

A sharp, authoritative voice answered on the second ring. "Melanie? This is Counselor Julian Mercer. Are the officers there?"

"Yes, Mr. Mercer," I said clearly. "Detective Vargas is attempting to execute a search warrant based on Mr. Patrick Reyes' claims of stolen bearer bonds."

Julian Mercer, one of the top criminal defense and corporate litigation attorneys in the country, let out a cold, dry chuckle over the speaker.

"Detective Vargas," Mercer spoke through the phone, his tone commanding immediate attention. "I suggest you check the legal registration of the funds in question before making an arrest. The $650,000 is held under Banco Nacional Trust Registration #8841, managed directly by my firm. Furthermore, Mr. Patrick Reyes' business accounts are currently under a federal temporary restraining order issued at 4:00 PM today by the State Tax Commission."

Detective Vargas froze. He looked at Patrick, whose confident expression suddenly cracked.

"What restraining order?" Patrick stammered, stepping back.

"The one filed regarding the $450,000 you attempted to clean through your son's marriage trust," Mercer replied viciously. "Officer, if you place my client in handcuffs tonight, I will personally file an unlawful arrest lawsuit against your department by 8:00 AM tomorrow."

Detective Vargas pulled his hand away from his cuffs, looking at Patrick with deep suspicion. "Mr. Reyes... is this money tied to an active commercial audit?"

Patrick's mouth opened, but no sound came out.
