Chapter 10 - The Horizon

The following morning at 8:00 AM, the main auditorium at Global Skyways Corporate Headquarters was packed with hundreds of journalists, major news networks, industry analysts, and employees. Cameras flashed continuously, filling the room with white light.

The video recorded by the passenger on Flight 842 had indeed exploded across the internet overnight, garnering tens of millions of views and sparking global conversations about corporate culture, authority, and systemic bias.

The announcer’s voice boomed over the public address system:

“Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the new Chief Executive Officer and President of Global Skyways Aviation, Maya Washington.”

Maya stepped out from behind the curtain, walking toward the podium with absolute grace, power, and authority. She wore a striking, crisp white suit, her head held high. The applause from the audience was deafening.

She adjusted the microphone and looked out at the sea of cameras and faces.

“Good morning,” Maya began, her voice steady and resonant, filling the room effortlessly. “Many of you have seen a video circulating online over the past eighteen hours. A video showing a pilot threatening to have a young Black woman arrested and dragged off an airplane simply for sitting in seat 2A.”

The auditorium grew pin-drop quiet.

“I am standing here today,” Maya continued, “to confirm that the video is real. The incident happened yesterday morning on Flight 842 from Chicago to Atlanta.”

She paused, taking a slow, deep breath, holding the gaze of the press corps.

“And I am also here to tell you,” Maya said, a subtle, triumphant smile touching her lips, “that the woman in seat 2A was me.”

Gasps rang out across the press room, followed immediately by a sudden storm of camera flashes and urgent whispers among reporters.

Maya held up a hand, bringing the room back to order smoothly.

“When Captain Thomas Arrington looked at me yesterday,” Maya explained, “he didn't see a chief executive. He didn't see an aviation leader. He saw someone he believed was powerless. He assumed that because of who I was, I didn't belong in that seat.”

She leaned over the podium, looking directly into the primary network camera lens.

“Today, as CEO of Global Skyways Aviation, I am sending a clear message to our crew members, our employees, and our millions of passengers around the world: Everyone belongs.”

She outlined the sweeping structural reforms she had mandated the evening before, detailing the new accountability measures, the cultural overhaul, and the complete termination of the individuals involved in the incident.

“Aviation is about connecting people,” Maya concluded, her eyes shining with vision and determination. “It’s about rising above borders, rising above limitations, and soaring toward new horizons. Under my leadership, Global Skyways will not only lead the industry in safety, efficiency, and operational excellence—we will lead it in respect, equality, and human compassion.”

The room erupted into overwhelming applause. Journalists stood up, shouting questions, but Maya simply smiled, bowed her head gracefully, and turned to walk off the stage.

As she stepped into the private executive lounge behind the auditorium, Chairman Arthur Pendelton was waiting with a glass of sparkling water.

“That was historic, Maya,” Arthur said quietly, handing her the glass. “You just changed this company forever.”

Maya looked out the floor-to-ceiling glass window of the lounge, watching a massive Boeing 778 airliner lift gracefully off the runway into the clear, blue morning sky.

“Not just this company, Arthur,” Maya said softly, taking a sip of water. “We’re changing the sky.”
