Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

By 3:15 PM, Flight 842 landed at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta. The flight had been unremarkable for the passengers, but for Captain Thomas Arrington and Flight Attendant Brenda Vance, it felt like a victory lap.
As the passengers disembarked, Brenda walked into the cockpit, carrying two fresh cups of coffee.
“Great job handling that situation back in Chicago, Captain,” Brenda said, leaning against the doorframe. “People think they can just talk to us however they want these days. It’s about respect.”
Arrington took a sip of his coffee, leaning back in his leather pilot seat with a satisfied grin. “It’s about maintaining order on my aircraft, Brenda. You give an inch, they take a mile. When passengers start questioning authority, safety is compromised. She needed to learn a lesson about how the real world works.”
Before Brenda could reply, the gate agent stepped into the jetbridge and knocked firmly on the open plane door.
“Captain Arrington? Brenda Vance?” the agent asked, holding a digital tablet.
“Yes?” Arrington responded.
“Corporate dispatch just sent down an urgent directive. You both are ordered to report immediately to Global Skyways Corporate Headquarters in downtown Atlanta. Room 400, the Executive Boardroom.”
Brenda blinked in confusion. “Corporate? Right now? We have a layover turn in two hours.”
“Your remaining flight legs for today have been reassigned to a backup crew,” the agent said. “The message came directly from the Chairman’s office. A town car is waiting for you at the lower curb right now.”
Arrington chuckled, brushing off Brenda’s sudden look of concern. “Don’t worry about it, Brenda. The passenger probably tried to file a complaint through the customer service line while we were in the air. Corporate probably wants a brief statement from us so their legal team can shut her down. We’ll be in and out in twenty minutes.”
Brenda relaxed, nodding. “Right. Probably just paperwork.”
Thirty minutes later, a sleek black sedan pulled up to the glass-and-steel skyscraper that served as the global headquarters of Global Skyways Aviation. The building was a monument to modern aviation engineering, housing over three thousand corporate employees and overseeing a fleet of over eight hundred commercial aircraft worldwide.
Arrington adjusted his tie and smoothed his uniform jacket as they entered the grand marble lobby. Brenda adjusted her scarf, trying to look pristine and professional.
They took the private executive elevator straight to the top floor—Floor 40.
When the elevator doors slid open, they were met by a quiet, high-stakes environment. The floor was lined with polished mahogany, floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the Atlanta skyline, and walls decorated with historic photos of the airline's fleet evolution.
A senior administrative assistant met them at the desk. “Captain Arrington, Ms. Vance. Follow me, please. The Board is waiting.”
Brenda glanced at Arrington. “The Board? As in… the Board of Directors?”
Arrington frowned slightly, a sudden knot of uncertainty tightening in his stomach, but he quickly forced a confident smile. “It’s standard procedure for high-profile liability claims, Brenda. Stay calm. Stick to the narrative: she was disruptive, she refused crew instructions, and we acted to protect flight safety.”
The assistant opened the heavy, soundproof double doors leading into the main conference room.
Arrington stepped inside, his shoulders back, ready to deliver a crisp, professional summary of his actions. But as he looked around the immense mahogany table, his confidence suffered its first fracture.

Seated around the table were the twelve most powerful figures in commercial aviation. The Board of Directors, the Chief Financial Officer, the Head of Human Resources, and Chief Legal Counsel. All of them sat in complete, solemn silence.
And at the far end of the room, sitting in the high-backed leather chair reserved exclusively for the Chief Executive Officer, was the woman from seat 2A.
