Chapter 2 - The Removal and the Boardroom

The airport police arrived ten minutes later. Two armed officers stepped onto the plane, looking uncomfortable as Captain Arrington pointed sternly at Maya.
“She’s refusing a lawful directive from the flight crew,” Arrington declared loudly, ensuring the entire cabin heard. “I want her off now.”
The senior officer, a seasoned sergeant named Miller, looked at Maya. He saw a impeccably dressed woman sitting quietly, her hands placed neatly in her lap, showing no signs of intoxication or aggression.
“Ma’am,” Officer Miller said gently. “The captain has final authority over the aircraft. Even if there is a misunderstanding, if he asks you to deplane, you have to comply. We can resolve the details inside the terminal.”
Maya nodded gracefully. “I understand your position, Officer. I will not make your job difficult.”
She unbuckled her seatbelt, retrieved her bag, gathered her coat, and stood up. As she walked down the aisle, Captain Arrington stood near the galley, his chin tilted high in triumph. Brenda Vance stood beside him, a slight, victorious smirk playing on her lips.
“Have a nice day in Atlanta, ma’am,” Brenda whispered with sugary venom as Maya passed.
Maya stopped briefly, looked Brenda in the eye, and smiled—a calm, enigmatic smile that sent an unexpected chill down the flight attendant's spine. “Thank you, Brenda. I assure you, my day will be very interesting.”
Once inside the gate area, Officer Miller walked alongside Maya away from the crowded jetbridge. “Ma’am, do you want to file an official report? To be honest, you didn’t seem to be doing anything wrong in there.”
“Not here, Officer,” Maya replied smoothly, pulling out her smartphone. “And don’t worry. The report will be delivered directly to the people who need to see it.”
She tapped her screen and brought up a private contact card labeled Direct - Board of Directors. She pressed call.
It picked up on the second ring.
“Maya?” spoke the deep voice of Arthur Pendelton, the senior chairman of the board for Global Skyways Aviation—the parent airline company operating the very flight she had just been booted from. “Are you in the air yet? We’ve finalized the emergency board meeting for 4:00 PM today at headquarters.”
“I’m still at the gate in Chicago, Arthur,” Maya said, her voice dropping into a tone of formidable authority. “I was just forcibly removed from Flight 842 by Captain Thomas Arrington and Flight Attendant Brenda Vance.”
There was a sharp intake of breath on the other end of the line. “What? On what possible grounds?”
“Because,” Maya said coolly, “Flight Attendant Vance assumed a young Black woman couldn’t legally own a first-class ticket in 2A, and Captain Arrington decided to flex his command authority rather than investigate the truth. The local police were called to escort me off.”
Silence hung heavily on the phone line for three full seconds before Arthur spoke again, his voice trembling slightly with sudden panic.
“Maya… they don’t know who you are, do they?”
“No,” Maya replied. “They don’t know that three days ago, the Board of Directors officially ratified my appointment. They don’t know that effective 8:00 AM this morning, I am the new Chief Executive Officer of Global Skyways Aviation.”
Arthur groaned. “Good Lord. Maya, I am so sorry. I can have a private jet dispatched for you immediately—”
“No need, Arthur,” Maya interrupted calmly. “I will take a charter flight and arrive in Atlanta by 3:30 PM. Keep the 4:00 PM board meeting exactly as scheduled. But add two items to the mandatory attendance list.”
“Anything you need.”
“I want Captain Thomas Arrington and Flight Attendant Brenda Vance summoned to the executive suite at corporate headquarters the moment Flight 842 lands in Atlanta. Tell them it’s an urgent operational review regarding an inflight incident.”
“Consider it done,” Arthur said. “Maya… how do you want to handle this?”
May you like
Maya looked out the terminal window, watching Flight 842 push back from the gate, carrying the oblivious crew toward their destination.
“With absolute transparency, Arthur,” Maya said softly. “It’s time to clean house.”
