Chapter 10 - The Empress of the City

Six months later.

The grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel was illuminated by crystal chandeliers, filled with the elite of Chicago society—politicians, judges, business moguls, and high-ranking syndicate bosses from across the Midwest. It was the annual Vulpes Charity Gala, a high-society event that cemented the family’s absolute dominance over the city's legitimate and illegitimate sectors.

Music from a full orchestral band floated through the air as servers in black tuxedos carried silver trays of champagne.

At the top of the grand double staircase, two figures appeared.

Dominic Vulpes looked regal and formidable in a custom black tuxedo, his arm wrapped firmly around the waist of the woman beside him.

Harper stood beside him, a vision of dark elegance. She wore a floor-length emerald green silk gown that hugged her curves perfectly, her dark hair styled in sophisticated waves over one shoulder. Around her neck rested a breathtaking diamond necklace—a Vulpes heirloom that Dominic had placed around her throat that morning.

As they stepped down the grand staircase together, conversation ceased across the ballroom. Heads turned, whispers spread through the crowd, and eyes filled with awe and respect followed their every move.

In the corner of the room, standing among the minor guests near the bar, stood Caleb Thorne.

He was wearing a cheap, rented suit, working as an entry-level assistant for a catering company after being blacklisted from every financial firm in the state. He carried a silver tray of empty glasses, his face pale and haggard, looking up at the grand staircase with hollow, defeated eyes.

He watched as Harper—the woman he had cheated on, lied to, and discarded—descended the stairs like royalty, flanked by the most powerful man in the state.

Harper’s eyes briefly swept over the crowd, catching sight of Caleb standing near the bar with his tray. Her gaze lingered on him for half a second. There was no anger in her eyes, no desire for further revenge—only cold, absolute indifference. She looked straight past him as if he were nothing more than a shadow on the wall.

Caleb shrank back into the crowd, completely destroyed by the realization of what he had thrown away.

Dominic noticed her subtle shift in attention. He looked down at her, his arm tightening around her waist as he pulled her closer to his side.

“Everything all right, my queen?” Dominic murmured into her ear, his deep voice sending a pleasant shiver down her spine.

Harper looked up at her husband-to-be, her eyes shining with pure happiness and absolute power. She reached up, gently adjusting the lapel of his tuxedo jacket, her diamond engagement ring catching the light of the chandeliers.

“Everything is perfect, Dominic,” Harper replied softly, a radiant, confident smile spreading across her lips.

They stepped onto the main floor of the ballroom, surrounded by applause and deference as the music swelled. Harper held Dominic’s hand tightly, walking side-by-side with the man who had turned her heartbreak into an empire.

She had burst into the wrong room crying six months ago, looking for a place to hide from her pain. Instead, she had found her true place in the world—not as a victim in the shadows, but as the undisputed Empress of Chicago.
