Chapter 8 - The Boardroom

The high-rise headquarters of Vulpes Holdings towered fifty stories above the Chicago River, a glittering monument of steel and dark glass. To the public, it was an elite venture capital firm. To those who knew the truth, it was the nerve center of the Vulpes crime syndicate.
At 10:30 AM, Harper walked through the grand marble lobby, dressed in an immaculate charcoal-grey power suit she had purchased that morning. Her dark hair was pulled back into a sharp, professional bun, her makeup flawless, and her confidence restored.
She was flanked by Vance and two muscular guards in dark suits who walked half a step behind her, ensuring no one approached her as she made her way toward the private executive elevators.
The elevator sped silently up to the top floor. When the doors opened, Harper stepped out into a vast, carpeted hallway lined with floor-to-ceiling windows. At the end of the hall stood double mahogany doors guarded by two armed men.
Vance stepped forward, nodding to the guards. The doors were pulled open, revealing a massive, soundproofed boardroom dominated by a forty-foot conference table made of polished dark oak.
Seated around the table were twelve men—the captains and division heads of the Vulpes family. They were older men with hard faces, expensive suits, and eyes that had seen decades of violence and power struggles. At the far end of the table sat Julian Ross—a silver-haired man in his late fifties, dressed in a three-thousand-dollar tailored suit, looking utterly relaxed as he sipped his coffee.
At the head of the table sat Dominic Vulpes.
He looked imposing and magnificent, dressed in a bespoke black suit with a dark red tie. When Harper entered the room, every conversation stopped instantly. Twelve pairs of cold, calculating eyes turned to look at her.
Dominic stood up from his chair, a subtle smile touching his lips as he looked at Harper. “Gentlemen,” Dominic’s deep voice echoed through the vast room. “Allow me to introduce Miss Harper Reed. She is our new Chief Financial Auditor.”
A quiet murmur ran through the room. Julian Ross scoffed softly, leaning back in his leather chair. “An auditor, Dominic? Since when do we bring outside civilians into family meetings? We have internal accounting teams for this.”
Dominic didn't shift his gaze from Ross. “Our internal teams failed to notice a leak in our logistics division for eighteen months, Julian. Miss Reed found it in two hours.”
Julian’s relaxed expression flickered for a fraction of a second, a shadow of tension crossing his features before he recovered his composure. “A leak? What are you talking about?”
Dominic gestured to Harper. “Floor is yours, Miss Reed.”
Harper took a deep breath, setting her leather briefcase on the table. She pulled out a stack of bound financial reports and distributed them down both sides of the long table. The captains picked them up, flipping through the pages with growing interest.
Harper walked over to the large digital display at the front of the room, plugging in her encrypted flash drive. A complex financial flowchart appeared on the screen, highlighted with bright red indicators.
“Over the last eighteen months,” Harper began, her voice steady, clear, and commanding, “Vulpes Shipping & Transit has routed two point four million dollars to a vendor called Apex Maintenance Group for fleet repairs.”
She clicked a button, bringing up the Delaware incorporation filings. “Apex is a ghost entity. It has no physical assets, no employees, and no other clients. The shell company’s bank accounts route directly through an offshore bank in the Cayman Islands.”
She turned to face Julian Ross, her eyes fixed on his pale face. “And every single wire transfer was personally authorized using CFO Julian Ross’s private digital encryption key.”
The boardroom erupted into chaos.
Captains slammed their hands on the table, shouting curses and demanding answers. Two men stood up, their hands moving reflexively toward their jackets.
Julian Ross went deathly pale, staring at the screen in absolute disbelief. “This... this is absurd! The girl is lying! She’s an outsider framing me!”
“The bank routing numbers carry your personal biometric signature, Julian,” Harper said calmly, crossing her arms. “Unless someone stole your thumbprint and your private key every month for two years, you are the only person who could have moved that money.”
Julian looked around the room frantically, seeing the cold, murderous stares of his fellow captains. He pushed his chair back, standing up so fast it tipped over onto the floor.
“Dominic, listen to me!” Julian pleaded, his voice high with panic. “It wasn't just me! The Rossy family... they forced my hand! They threatened my family!”
Dominic stood up slowly from the head of the table. The room instantly fell silent once again, the tension in the air so thick it felt suffocating.
“Thank you, Julian,” Dominic said softly, his voice dropping to a dangerous, gravelly whisper. “That was all the confirmation I needed.”
Dominic looked over at Vance. “Take him to the basement.”
Two guards grabbed Julian Ross by his arms, dragging the screaming, struggling man out of the boardroom. The heavy mahogany doors shut behind them, leaving the remaining captains sitting in absolute silence.
Dominic walked down the length of the long table, stopping right beside Harper. He looked at the twelve men sitting before him, his dark eyes burning with absolute authority.
“Miss Reed has saved this family millions today,” Dominic announced, his voice carrying to every corner of the room. “She has proven her value and her loyalty. From this moment on, her word on financial matters is my word. If anyone in this room disobeys her, disrespects her, or fails to co-operate with her audits, they answer to me directly.”
He looked down at Harper, reaching out to take her hand in his, raising it slightly before the entire board.
“Do I make myself clear?” Dominic demanded.
May you like
“Yes, Capo,” the twelve captains responded in unison, bowing their heads in complete deference.
Harper looked around the room, feeling the sheer weight of the power surrounding her. She had stepped out of the shadows and into the sunlight of the Vulpes empire, standing side-by-side with the king of Chicago.
