Chapter 6 - The Confrontation

Caleb blinked, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water as he looked between Harper and Dominic. Chloe shrank behind Caleb, her hands clutching his rumpled suit jacket, her eyes wide with terror as she looked at the armed guards standing near the door.

“Harper, please!” Caleb pleaded, taking a small step forward before Vance growled and pushed him back. “You have to help me! These men... they’re crazy! They locked us in a room downstairs! Tell them who I am!”

Harper leaned back in Dominic’s high-backed leather chair, steepling her fingers together just as she had seen Dominic do earlier. “I think they know exactly who you are, Caleb. A thief. A liar. And a coward.”

Caleb’s face flushed red with a mixture of embarrassment and rising anger. “Harper, what the hell are you talking about? I made a mistake downstairs with Chloe, okay? We were drunk! It meant nothing! You can’t let these criminals hold us here over some stupid bar tab!”

Dominic stepped forward slowly, placing one hand on the back of Harper’s chair. His presence immediately silenced the room, his dark eyes fixing on Caleb with the cold indifference of a man looking at a bug he was about to step on.

“You are in no position to demand anything, Mr. Thorne,” Dominic said softly, his voice echoing in the quiet room. “You owe my establishment sixteen thousand dollars in unpaid charges. Charges that you racked up while entertaining your mistress on Miss Reed’s corporate account.”

Chloe gasped, turning to stare at Caleb. “What? You told me you owned that account!”

“Shut up, Chloe!” Caleb snapped frantically, before turning back to Dominic. “Look, Mr. Vulpes... I offered you a deal downstairs! Harper works at Sterling & Associates! She has access to all their private client files! She can give you whatever you want if you just let me go!”

Harper felt a cold shock wave of disgust wash over her. Even now, trapped in a room with a mob boss, Caleb’s immediate reaction was to sacrifice her to save himself.

Dominic chuckled—a dark, humorless sound that made the hair on the back of Harper’s neck stand up. “Do you know what I despise most in this world, Thorne? Disloyalty. A man who will sell out his own blood, his own partner, to save his skin is not a man at all. He is trash.”

Dominic gestured to Vance. “Bring up Mr. Thorne’s asset portfolio.”

Vance stepped forward and handed Dominic a sleek tablet. Dominic flipped through the pages casually. “Let’s see. A 2024 BMW M3—financed, of course. A two-bedroom lease on Oak Street—held under Miss Reed’s primary name. A investment account containing forty thousand dollars—which, according to my bank records, was funded entirely by transfers from Miss Reed’s personal savings over the last two years.”

Caleb swallowed hard, panic visibly seizing him. “Where... where did you get those records?”

“I own this city, Thorne,” Dominic said flatly. He looked over at Harper. “Miss Reed has just performed an invaluable service for my organization. As compensation, I have agreed to handle your debt to me personally.”

Dominic handed the tablet back to Vance. “Effective immediately, the Vulpes Financial Group has purchased all outstanding loans and accounts associated with your name. I now own your car, your investment account, and your personal credit lines.”

“You can’t do that!” Caleb screamed, his voice cracking. “That’s illegal!”

Dominic raised an eyebrow, genuinely amused. “Illegal? Mr. Thorne, you are standing in a locked room in the middle of the night talking to a man who controls half the docks in North America. Law is a concept for civilians.”

Dominic stepped closer to Caleb, his tall frame looming over the terrified man. “I am seizing your BMW to cover your sixteen thousand dollar debt. I am seizing your investment account and transferring the entire balance back to Miss Reed to compensate her for your grand theft. And as for your apartment lease...” Dominic looked at Harper.

“Cancel his name from the lease,” Harper said coldly, her voice ringing clear and strong through the room. “He has two hours to get his clothes out of my apartment before I change the locks.”

“Harper, no!” Caleb cried out, dropping to his knees on the rug. “Please! You can’t do this to me! I have nowhere to go! My job—”

“Your job at Medical Dynamics has already been informed of your attempt to trade corporate secrets,” Dominic added smoothly, striking the final blow. “I imagine your termination letter will arrive by email within the hour.”

Caleb fell silent, staring at the floor in absolute horror. In less than three hours, he had lost his money, his car, his apartment, his career, and his dignity. Chloe took two steps away from him, looking at him with utter disgust before turning to Vance.

“Can... can I leave?” Chloe asked nervously, her voice trembling. “I didn't do anything!”

Dominic didn't even look at her. “Get them out of my sight, Vance. If either of them ever steps foot in one of my establishments again, throw them in the river.”

Vance grabbed Caleb by his collar, dragging him to his feet like a sack of trash, while another guard escorted a sobbing Chloe out the door. The heavy oak door slammed shut behind them, leaving the room in complete silence once again.

Harper sat behind the desk, her heart pounding furiously against her ribs. She looked down at her hands—they were steady now. The crushing weight of betrayal that had suffocated her hours ago was gone, replaced by a strange, thrilling sense of liberation.

Dominic walked around the desk and stood beside her chair, looking down at her with a look of profound respect in his dark eyes.

“How do you feel, Harper?” he asked softly.

May you like

Harper looked up at him, a small, genuine smile touching her lips for the first time that night. “I feel... surprisingly good.”

Dominic reached out, taking her hand and pulling her gently to her feet. “Good. Because our business is far from finished, sweetheart. Now we have to deal with Julian Ross.”
