Chapter 7 - The Shadow of the Syndicate

The early morning sun was just beginning to peek over the Chicago skyline, casting long golden light across the empty streets, when a sleek black sedan pulled up to the curb outside a high-end apartment building in the Gold Coast district.

Harper sat in the plush leather back seat, looking out the tinted window at the building she had called home for the last two years. Beside her sat Dominic, impeccably dressed in a fresh dark suit, his arm resting casually along the leather seat behind her.

“Vance’s team cleared the apartment twenty minutes ago,” Dominic informed her, his deep voice smooth and comforting. “Thorne packed two suitcases and left. The locks have already been rekeyed, and a new security code has been set.”

Harper turned to look at him. “Thank you, Dominic. For everything.”

“You owe me no thanks, Harper,” Dominic replied, his dark eyes locking onto hers. “You delivered Julian Ross’s betrayal on a silver platter. The information you gave me tonight saved my organization millions. It is I who am in your debt.”

Harper looked down at the velvet box resting in her lap—a brand new, encrypted phone Dominic had given her, along with a black card linked to a private corporate account.

“Julian Ross doesn't know I found out about the fake vendor yet, does he?” Harper asked.

“No,” Dominic said, his expression hardening slightly. “He believes his ledger is secure. Tomorrow morning, I am calling a full board meeting at Vulpes Holdings. I want you there, Harper.”

Harper blinked, surprise showing on her face. “Me? At a mafia board meeting?”

“You are my chief auditor now,” Dominic stated calmly, as if it were the most natural thing in the world. “I want you to present the evidence directly to the captains. I want them to see the brilliant mind that uncovered the rat in our house.”

Harper felt a sudden knot of anxiety form in her stomach. “Dominic... these men are dangerous. What if Julian Ross fights back? What if he tries to target me?”

Dominic leaned closer, reaching out to gently cup her jaw with his large, warm hand. His thumb stroked her cheekbone, sending an electric heat rushing through her veins. “No one will touch you, Harper. You carry the mark of my protection now. Anyone who looks at you with malice answers directly to me.”

His face was inches from hers. Harper could feel the warm breath against her lips, smelled the familiar, intoxicating scent of sandalwood and leather. For a moment, the entire world outside the car faded away. She wanted him to kiss her—wanted it with a fierce, sudden intensity that frightened her.

Dominic’s eyes drifted down to her lips, his dark gaze darkening with unspoken desire. But with immense restraint, he simply pressed a light, linger kiss to her forehead before pulling back.

“Get some rest, Harper,” Dominic whispered softly. “A driver will pick you up at ten o'clock tomorrow.”

Harper nodded, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs. She opened the car door, stepping out into the crisp morning air. She walked up the steps of her building, turning back just once to see the black sedan gliding silently away into the morning light, leaving her alone with her thoughts.

She walked into her apartment. The space was quiet, clean, and completely devoid of Caleb’s belongings. His clothes were gone, his photos removed from the walls, his presence erased as if he had never existed.

Harper walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window, looking out over the waking city. She touched her forehead where Dominic’s lips had rested moments before. She had started the night as a heartbroken victim running from a cheating fiancé. Now, she was stepping into the shadows of a crime empire, holding the power to bring down a traitor, and falling irrevocably for the most dangerous man in Chicago.
