Chapter 4 - The Midnight Audit

The rainy autumn turned into a bitter New York winter. Harper’s life became a blur of endless spreadsheets, midnight phone calls, and secret meetings with Roman in safe houses across the city. The dynamic between them was changing; the line between captor and prisoner was blurring into something far more complex and dangerous.
One evening, deep into December, Harper was working late in Roman’s private residence—a minimalist penthouse on the Upper East Side. The apartment was cold, decorated in shades of grey and black, mirroring the soul of the man who lived there.
Roman entered the study carrying two glasses of scotch. He set one down in front of her.
"Drink," he ordered gently. "You've been looking at that screen for eight hours straight."
Harper leaned back, rubbing her aching eyes. She picked up the glass and took a small sip, feeling the amber liquid warm her throat. "I’m close, Roman. I can feel it. But every time I trace the main liquidity pool, it hits a wall in a trust fund called The Vanguard Legacy."
Roman paused, his glass halfway to his mouth. "Vanguard?"
"Yes. It was created thirty years ago. It’s an irrevocable trust designed to pay out only in the event of a total leadership vacuum within the Moretti family."
Roman set his glass down hard on the desk. "That trust was set up by my father before he was assassinated."
Harper looked up, caught by the pain in his voice. She had read about the assassination of Roman’s father six years ago—a bloody hit in a Midtown restaurant that had sparked a six-month gang war before Roman took control and restored order.
"If the trust pays out during a leadership vacuum," Harper realized aloud, "then whoever controls the secondary key inherits the entire financial network automatically. They don't need a board vote. They just need you out of the picture."
"And Silvio has been feeding money into that trust to build up its valuation," Roman said, his eyes darkening with realization. "He doesn't just want to depose me. He wants to execute me."
Harper felt a sudden knot of fear tightening in her chest. She had entered this arrangement wanting only to save her brother, but over the past months, she had seen the man behind the ruthless exterior. Roman was a product of a brutal system, but he possessed a fierce sense of honor and an undeniable protectiveness toward those he claimed as his own.
"Roman," Harper said softly, standing up from her chair. "If you know this, you can stop it. Cancel the winter assembly. Take down Silvio now."
Roman walked over to her, stopping mere inches away. "If I strike without absolute proof before the entire family board, it triggers a civil war. The captains will divide, and the streets will burn. I need the master key, Harper. I need the digital footprint that ties Silvio directly to the creation of the Vanguard override code."
"I can get it," Harper offered, looking up into his dark eyes. "But I need access to the central server room at the main family estate during the winter dinner. It’s the only place where the offline ledgers are stored."
Roman looked down at her, his hand rising to gently touch her jawline. His thumb brushed over her cheekbone, a gesture so tender it sent a shiver straight down her spine.
"It is too dangerous, Harper," Roman said low. "If they discover what you are doing, even I might not be able to pull you out in time."
"You said it yourself," Harper whispered, stepping closer to him, her heart beating frantically against her ribs. "You bought my mind. Let me finish the job."

Roman stared at her for a long moment, his eyes searching hers for any sign of hesitation. Seeing only resolve, he slowly nodded, his fingers lingering on her skin before dropping away.
"If we do this," Roman said, "we do it completely. No mistakes. No mercy."
