Chapter 6 - The Golden Cage

The Bellamy Grand Hotel stood as a monument to gilded excess in the heart of Manhattan. Its ballroom, built in the 1920s, featured soaring ceilings, intricate crystal chandeliers, and white marble floors that reflected the bright lights like polished ice.

Harper arrived ninety minutes before the start of the winter dinner, wearing the emerald silk gown Roman had selected for her. The deep green fabric draped over her shoulders, stunning against her pale skin. Beneath the gown, hidden inside her small clutch, was a high-speed encrypted flash drive loaded with her custom extraction software.

The hotel was crawling with Moretti security. Men in dark suits with earpieces stood at every doorway, their eyes scanning every staff member and guest.

Harper made her way toward the administrative wing, using a security pass Roman had provided. She moved quickly, her heels clicking softly against the carpeted corridors of the back office.

She found the server room located behind the primary security office. The door was secured with a biometric scanner and a six-digit passcode.

Harper pulled a small device from her bag—a frequency cloner Roman’s tech team had prepared. She pressed it against the keypad. The light flickered from red to yellow, then flashed green with a soft chime.

The door unlocked.

Harper slipped inside, pulling the heavy door shut behind her. The server room was freezing, filled with the hum of cooling fans and the steady blinking of blue and green status lights.

She rushed to the main terminal, plugging the flash drive into the primary diagnostic port.

"Come on," she whispered, her fingers flying across the keyboard as she initiated the bypass sequence.

Lines of code scrolled down the screen at breakneck speed. The program was penetrating the security layers of the Vanguard Legacy trust fund, pulling out the hidden transfer logs, the digital signatures, and the names of every offshore shell company associated with Silvio Moretti.

10%... 35%... 70%...

The progress bar reached 92% when the monitor suddenly flashed red. A system alert popped up: EXTERNAL OVERRIDE DETECTED.

Harper’s heart dropped into her stomach. Someone was monitoring the server from an external node.

She didn't stop. She forced the script to execute a hard dump, forcing the remaining files onto the flash drive.

100%. TRANSFER COMPLETE.

Harper yanked the flash drive out of the terminal, hiding it inside her clutch just as the heavy metal door clicked open behind her.

She spun around, expecting to see Roman’s security team.

Instead, standing in the doorway was Silvio Moretti, flanked by two armed men holding silenced pistols.

Silvio smiled—a cold, predatory expression that chilled Harper to the bone. "Miss Evans," he said smoothly. "I must admit, I am impressed. You are far more persistent than the accountants we usually employ."

Harper backed up against the cold server rack, her heart hammering against her ribs. "It’s over, Silvio. I have everything. The offshore transfers, the secondary ledgers, the Vanguard override."

Silvio laughed softly, stepping into the room while his men guarded the exit. "You think you’ve caught me? My dear girl, you’ve done exactly what I needed you to do."

Harper frowned, a cold dread pooling in her stomach. "What are you talking about?"

"Roman is paranoid," Silvio explained, pulling a cigar from his pocket. "He knew someone was stealing, but he couldn't prove it without an expert. So I made sure your brother’s debt landed on his desk. I made sure he saw your audit trail. I knew he would hire you to build the digital evidence board."

Harper felt the room spin. "You... you planned this?"

"I needed a clean line of digital evidence pointing away from my primary accounts and straight into Roman’s personal portfolio," Silvio said, his eyes glittering with malice. "The drive in your hand doesn't just show my transactions. Thanks to a little modification made by my tech team ten minutes ago, it shows that Roman was the one moving those funds to eliminate the board."

"That’s a lie," Harper gasped.

"It doesn't matter if it’s a lie," Silvio sneered. "Tonight, before the whole family, you will present that drive to show Roman's corruption. And if you refuse? Well... your brother Leo is currently sitting in a car outside this hotel with two of my men. One phone call, and he dies."
