Chapter 7 - The Master’s Gambit

Harper was escorted down to the grand ballroom by Silvio’s men, her mind racing at a terrifying speed. She had been played. Every step she had taken, every ledger she had unraveled, had been anticipated by Silvio’s faction to trap Roman.
The ballroom was now filled with three hundred people. The air was charged with high-society chatter, the clinking of champagne flutes, and the low hum of string instruments playing soft classical music.
Roman stood near the center of the room, surrounded by several high-ranking captains and foreign investors. He looked powerful, immaculate, and utterly in control. But as Harper entered the room flanked by Silvio’s men, Roman’s eyes met hers instantly across the crowd.
He saw the pale terror on her face. He saw the subtle tilt of her head—a warning.
Silvio walked up to Roman, a wide, fake smile spread across his face. "Roman, my nephew," Silvio said loudly, drawing the attention of nearby guests. "Before we sit for dinner, I believe your special guest has something she wishes to present to the family."
The music slowly faded as people noticed the tension between the two leaders of the Moretti empire. Captains, lawyers, and politicians shifted closer, sensing a confrontation.
Roman’s eyes narrowed as he looked at Silvio, then back at Harper. "What is the meaning of this, Uncle?"
"Miss Evans has completed her audit," Silvio announced to the entire room, his voice echoing under the high ceilings. "The audit you commissioned to find the missing thirty million dollars from our logistics accounts. Show them, Miss Evans. Tell them who has been robbing the Moretti family."
Harper stood in the center of the floor, three hundred pairs of eyes locked on her. She felt the heavy weight of the flash drive in her clutch. She knew that if she exposed Silvio’s modified files, Roman would be framed instantly, triggering his immediate execution by the family council. But if she refused, Leo’s life was forfeit.
Roman stepped toward her, his posture rigid. "Harper," he said softly, his voice carrying a warning. "Whatever it is, speak."
Harper looked at Roman. She saw no fear in his eyes—only a deep, unwavering confidence that unsettled her. She realized then that Roman Moretti was never a step behind. He had known about the trap all along.
She remembered his words from weeks ago: In my world, dress-up is armor.
Harper took a deep breath, her hands trembling as she reached into her clutch. She didn't pull out the flash drive to hand to Silvio.
Instead, she stepped directly up to Roman.

The entire ballroom fell dead silent.
Harper lifted her hand and struck Roman across the face with every ounce of force left in her body.
