Chapter 1 - THE WOMAN BEHIND THE MIRROR

The first thing Elena Hart heard was the sound of glass breaking.
The second was the laughter.
It was a strange combination—sharp crystal exploding across marble, followed by the soft, careless laughter of people who had never worried about the price of anything.
Elena froze.
She was standing near the grand staircase of the Bellamont Hotel, balancing a silver tray against her hip. Her uniform was still damp beneath the collar from rushing through the kitchen. She had been working since noon, and her feet were aching.
But none of that mattered anymore.
Across the lobby, a woman in an emerald-green dress had one hand buried in the hair of another woman.
The woman being held was Elena's coworker, Mia.
"Please," Mia whispered. "I didn't do anything."
The woman in green shoved her again.
Mia stumbled backward.
Her shoulder struck the enormous antique mirror covering the wall.
CRACK.
A spiderweb of fractures spread across the glass.
Everyone stopped talking.
Everyone except the woman in green.
"You spilled champagne on my dress," she snapped.
"I said I'm sorry."
"Sorry?"
The woman laughed bitterly.
"You people always say sorry."
Elena's fingers tightened around the tray.
She knew the woman.
Everyone in the hotel did.
Victoria Kane.
Twenty-nine. Heiress. Socialite. Daughter of one of the city's most powerful families.
And, more importantly, the woman currently sitting beside the most feared man in the room.
Damian Vale.
The Vale name carried whispers wherever it went.
Businesses.
Nightclubs.
Shipping companies.
Private security.
And rumors nobody repeated loudly.
Damian stood several feet behind Victoria.
Tall.
Impossibly calm.
Dressed in a black suit that looked almost severe against the warm gold of the hotel.
He wasn't watching Victoria.
He was watching Elena.
For one strange second, their eyes met.
Elena immediately looked away.
She had learned a long time ago that wealthy men like Damian Vale didn't notice people like her.
At least, they weren't supposed to.
"Clean this up," Victoria ordered.
Mia stared at her.
"I—I need to see the manager."
Victoria's expression hardened.
"You need to learn your place."
Then she raised her hand.
Elena stepped forward.
"That's enough."
The entire lobby seemed to inhale.
Victoria slowly turned.
"What did you say?"
Elena's heart hammered against her ribs.
She could feel every pair of eyes on her.
"I said that's enough."
Victoria looked Elena up and down.
Then she smiled.
It wasn't a pleasant smile.
"And who exactly are you?"
"Someone who works here."
"Then work."
Victoria pointed at the broken mirror.
"Clean it."
Elena looked at Mia.
Then at the shattered glass.
"No."
Silence.
A security guard shifted nervously near the entrance.
Victoria's eyes widened.
"No?"
Elena swallowed.
"I'll clean the glass. But she needs medical attention first."
Victoria stepped closer.
"You have no idea who you're speaking to."
Elena's voice was quiet.
"Neither do you."
Victoria's face changed.
For the first time, she looked genuinely angry.
She reached for Elena.
But someone caught her wrist.
Damian.
He hadn't moved quickly.
He hadn't raised his voice.
He simply appeared beside them.
"Enough."
Victoria stared at him.
"Damian—"
"I said enough."
His voice was low.
The room became silent again.
Victoria pulled her hand away.
"You embarrassed me."
Damian didn't answer.
His eyes moved to Mia.
Then to the shattered mirror.
Then back to Elena.
"What happened?"
Victoria opened her mouth.
Elena answered first.
"She pushed her."
Victoria's expression turned murderous.
Damian's gaze remained on Elena.
"Did you see it?"
"Yes."
"Are you sure?"
Elena nodded.
"Yes."
He studied her face.
Something about the way he looked at her made Elena uncomfortable.
Not because he frightened her.
Because he seemed to be searching for something.
A memory.
A detail.
A connection.
Then his eyes dropped.
To Elena's left wrist.
She instinctively covered it.
There was a thin, pale scar there.
A tiny crescent-shaped mark she'd carried since childhood.
Damian's expression changed.
Just slightly.
But Elena noticed.
"Where did you get that?"
She frowned.
"The scar?"
"Yes."
Elena looked down.
"I don't remember."
"Everyone remembers their scars."
"Not this one."
Damian stepped closer.
Elena could hear the faint murmur of guests behind them.
He lowered his voice.
"Who gave it to you?"
"No one."
"Think."
"I was a child."
His jaw tightened.
"What year?"
Elena stared at him.
"Why does it matter?"
Damian didn't answer.
Instead, he looked toward the broken mirror.
For a moment, the powerful, untouchable man seemed shaken.
Then he reached inside his jacket and pulled out his phone.
"Call Dr. Mercer," he told one of his men.
The man immediately obeyed.
Victoria looked confused.
"Damian, what's happening?"
He ignored her.
His eyes remained on Elena.
"What's your full name?"
"Elena Hart."
The color drained from his face.
"What?"
"Elena Hart."
He took one slow step backward.
Nobody understood why.
Then he whispered something so quietly that only Elena heard.
"My father searched for you for eleven years."
Elena's breath caught.
"What?"
Damian looked at her scar again.
And suddenly the broken mirror wasn't the most important thing in the room.
"You don't remember me," he said.
Elena shook her head.
"I've never met you."
"No."
His eyes darkened.
"You haven't."
He looked toward the shattered glass.
"Because the last time you saw me..."
He stopped.
Elena waited.
Damian's expression became unreadable.
"...I was dying."
And across the lobby, behind the frightened guests and the glittering chandeliers, an elderly man suddenly dropped his champagne glass.
May you like
He had heard every word.
And he knew exactly who Elena Hart really was.
