Chapter 9 - THE HEALING

The next morning, the news rocked New York City.

The Kane empire had collapsed overnight under a mountain of federal indictments. Victoria Kane and her father were taken into federal custody, their assets frozen, and their political allies completely dismantled.

Back at Estate Vale, the morning sun broke through the clouds, bathing the Hudson River in brilliant gold light.

Elena stood on the stone terrace, wrapped in a comfortable white cardigan, holding a cup of warm chamomile tea.

Footsteps sounded on the stone path behind her.

Damian walked out, looking tired but completely at peace. The cold, severe edge that had defined him for fourteen years seemed to have softened.

He stood beside her at the stone balustrade, looking out over the water.

"It's over, Elena," Damian said softly. "Arthur Kane will spend the rest of his life in a federal prison. You and your child are completely safe."

Elena turned to look at him, her heart swelling with an emotion she could no longer deny. "And Thomas's sister?"

"Safe," Damian replied. "She’s back home with her family. Thomas was given a second chance—working under strict supervision at one of our northern farms."

Elena set her tea down on the stone table, stepping closer to him.

"You saved us, Damian," Elena whispered, taking his hand in hers.

Damian looked down at their joined hands—at the crescent scar on her wrist resting right beside the dark watch on his.

"You saved me first, Elena," Damian said softly, his voice full of deep warmth. "Fourteen years ago in that dumpster, you gave me a future. Every good thing I do with my life from this day forward belongs to you."

He reached out, gently cradling her cheek in his warm palm. Elena leaned into his touch, her eyes closing as a tear of pure relief slipped down her cheek.

"Stay with me, Elena," Damian whispered against her forehead. "Not because of a debt. Not because of the past. But because I cannot imagine a future without you and your son."

Elena looked up into his dark, beautiful eyes, a radiant smile illuminating her face.

"I'm not going anywhere, Damian," she whispered. "We're home."
