Chapter 10 - The Delivery

The private maternity wing of St. Catherine’s Medical Center was bathed in the soft, golden light of a summer dawn.
The agonizing cries that had echoed down the corridor hours earlier had finally ceased. The frantic footsteps of nurses, the shouting of medical staff, and the terrifying panic that had gripped Adrian DeLuca in the hallway were gone, replaced by a deep, miraculous stillness.
The double doors of the delivery room opened softly.
Dr. Sterling—a warm, highly respected obstetrician who had replaced the disgraced Dr. Julian—stepped out into the hallway, pulling off his surgical cap.
Adrian stood up instantly from the plastic chair where he had been waiting in agonizing suspense. Teddy Voss and two security guards stood behind him, holding their breath.
"Mr. DeLuca," Dr. Sterling smiled broadly, his eyes filled with warmth. "You can go in now. Mother and baby are doing wonderfully."
Adrian didn't wait. He pushed past the doctor, his long strides taking him rapidly through the entryway into the private delivery suite.
The room was quiet.
Madeline lay in the center of the large hospital bed, exhausted, her hair damp with sweat, her face pale but glowing with a radiant, transcendent happiness.
Wrapped in a soft blue blanket resting against her chest was a tiny, perfect newborn baby boy. He had a thick tuft of dark hair, tiny fingers clutching his mother’s gown, and dark, curious eyes that were currently wide open, looking around the room.
Adrian stopped at the edge of the bed, his legs feeling remarkably weak, his chest heaving as he stared at his wife and son.
"Adrian..." Madeline whispered softly, looking up at him with a tired, dazzling smile. "Come meet your son."
Adrian walked over to the side of the bed and dropped to his knees on the floor. He raised a shaking hand, gently touching the baby’s tiny, velvet-soft cheek.
The baby let out a soft, tiny squeak, turning his head toward the touch, his tiny fingers wrapping tightly around Adrian’s massive index finger.
Adrian choked back a violent sob, tears spilling freely down his broad, handsome face.
"He's perfect, Madeline," Adrian whispered, his voice cracking with sheer, unadulterated love. "He's absolutely perfect."
"He has your hair," Madeline smiled, leaning her head back against the pillows. "And your stubborn chin."
Adrian leaned up, pressing a long, deep kiss against Madeline’s forehead, holding her face in his hands as if she were the most precious creation on earth.
"Thank you," Adrian murmured against her skin. "Thank you for saving me, Madeline. Thank you for giving me a family."
"What are we going to name him?" Madeline asked softly, looking down at their son.
Adrian looked at the tiny boy holding his finger, then up into the emerald warmth of his wife's eyes.
"Arthur," Adrian decided softly. "Arthur Leo DeLuca. After your father, the man who built things to last."
Madeline smiled through her tears, resting her cheek against Adrian’s hand. "Arthur DeLuca. It’s perfect."
Outside the hospital window, the sun rose over the rolling green hills of Nashville, casting golden rays of light across the room, illuminating the tiny family sitting together in the quiet sanctuary of love.

The lies of the past were buried forever. The debt was paid in full.
And in their place stood a love that no mafia war, no family secret, and no dark tragedy could ever break.
