Chapter 6 - The Burying of Truth

The private room on the fourth floor was dimly lit and quiet.
Madeline lay in the hospital bed, an IV line hooked into her arm, pumping hydrating fluids into her veins. Her color had returned, her cheeks flushed with warm pink, her brown eyes soft and confused as she looked at the tall man standing at the foot of her bed.
Adrian hadn't spoken a word since entering the room ten minutes ago.
He stood like a ghost, his suit jacket discarded, his white shirt unbuttoned at the collar, staring at her with an intensity that terrified her.
"Adrian..." Madeline whispered softly, her voice raspy. "Why are you looking at me like that? What did the doctors say?"
Adrian slowly walked over to the side of her bed. He pulled a chair over and sat down, his hands resting on the edge of the mattress. His fingers were trembling.
"Madeline," Adrian said, his voice dropping into a deep, shaking whisper. "Are you in pain?"
"No," she murmured, touching her head. "Just a little dizzy. They said my blood pressure dropped."
Adrian took a deep breath. He reached out, his warm, rough hand gently taking hers. "The doctor ran a full blood panel while you were unconscious."
Madeline looked at him, her heart beating faster. "And?"
"You're pregnant, Madeline," Adrian said softly. "Eleven weeks."
Madeline froze. She stared at him, her brown eyes widening in sheer, unadulterated shock. "I'm... what?"
"You are carrying a child," Adrian repeated, his dark eyes brimming with unshed tears—a sight Madeline had never imagined in her wilder dreams. "My child."
"But... but you said..." Madeline stammered, her mind racing back to their first conversation in the antique shop. "You said you were infertile! You said the shooting in Miami—"
"I was lied to," Adrian interrupted, his voice turning into a dark, razor-sharp edge. "For fourteen years... I was lied to."
Madeline sat up in bed, ignoring the pull of her IV line. "Lied to? By whom? Who would tell a twenty-two-year-old boy he couldn't have children?"
Adrian didn't answer immediately. He reached into his coat pocket, pulled out a thick, faded yellow document—a copy of his original medical file from fourteen years ago that Teddy had just retrieved from the hospital's private archive vaults.
"Dr. Christopher Julian," Adrian said coldly.
Madeline gasped, remembering the silver-haired doctor at the Winter Ball—his smug smile, his strange comments about Adrian’s father, and his insistence on examining Madeline.
"Why?" Madeline whispered, horror dawning on her face. "Why would a family doctor fake a medical diagnosis like that?"
Adrian opened the yellow folder, laying the old lab reports on her lap.
"Look at the secondary signatures," Adrian directed softly.
Madeline picked up the yellowed pages. At the bottom of the diagnosis form declaring Adrian permanently sterile was Dr. Julian’s signature—and right beside it, an authorizing signature belonging to Marco DeLuca.
Adrian’s uncle.
Madeline felt cold shock cascade through her body. "Your uncle Marco... he made Dr. Julian fake your medical results fourteen years ago?"
"When I was shot in Miami," Adrian explained, his voice filled with an ancient, murderous fury, "my father was getting old. My uncle Marco wanted control of the syndicate. But as long as my father had a healthy, capable son who could produce an heir, Marco was second in line."
He leaned in closer, his thumb stroking the back of her hand.
"If Marco couldn't kill me in that alleyway in Miami," Adrian continued softly, "he decided to neutralize me politically. By paying Julian to falsify my fertility records and telling my father I was sterile, Marco ensured that my father would never fully trust me with the future of the family. Marco spent fourteen years waiting for my mother to die so he could challenge my leadership on the grounds that the bloodline ended with me."
Madeline gripped the yellow papers, her mind reeling at the sheer, monstrous cruelty of the conspiracy. For fourteen years, Adrian had carried the shame and isolation of believing he was broken—all so his ruthless uncle could seize power.
"And your father?" Madeline asked softly. "Did he know?"
"My father was a proud, foolish man," Adrian said bitterly. "He believed Julian implicitly. He was so ashamed of having a sterile son that he buried the report, never spoke of it again, and treated me like a broken tool until the day he died."
Tears spilled over Madeline’s eyelashes. She reached out, placing her warm hand against Adrian’s jaw, forcing him to look at her.
"You're not broken, Adrian," Madeline whispered, her voice fierce with love and emotion. "You never were."
Adrian leaned into her touch, closing his eyes, letting out a long, shuddering breath that felt like the release of a fourteen-year-old nightmare.
"We have a baby," Adrian whispered, opening his eyes, looking down at her softly rounded stomach beneath the white hospital blanket. "A child..."
Madeline smiled through her tears, taking his hand and placing it gently over her stomach. "A child who is going to have a father who protects them from every monster in the world."
The heavy wooden door to the hospital room opened softly.
Teddy stepped inside, his expression dark and serious. "Boss... we have a situation. Your uncle Marco and Dr. Julian just pulled into the hospital parking garage. They heard Mrs. DeLuca collapsed, and they're bringing a private medical team to 'take over her care.'"
Adrian’s face transformed in an instant. The vulnerable, emotional man vanished, replaced by the terrifying, lethal sovereign of the DeLuca empire.
He stood up slowly, smoothing down his white dress shirt.

"Teddy," Adrian commanded softly. "Call the private security team. Seal this entire floor."
He turned to Madeline, kissing her forehead deeply. "Rest, sweet girl. It's time I end this war once and for all."
