Chapter 8 - The Matriarch’s Blessing

The news of Marco’s betrayal and Madeline’s pregnancy swept through the DeLuca family like a summer wildfire.

By Saturday morning, the estate had been completely purged of Marco’s loyalists. The syndicate's captains had sworn absolute, unconditional fealty to Adrian, realizing that their leader was not only untouchable, but that his bloodline was now permanently secured.

In the east wing of the manor, the morning sun poured through the large bay windows of Victoria DeLuca’s sitting room.

Victoria sat in her high-backed chair, wrapped in her cashmere shawl. But today, her pale cheeks held a faint color, and her blue eyes were bright with an emotion she hadn't felt in decades.

On the settee across from her sat Madeline, holding a framed ultrasound picture in her hands.

Adrian stood behind Madeline’s chair, his arm resting gently around his wife’s shoulders, his face relaxed and peaceful.

Victoria looked down at the small black-and-white printout resting on her lap—the tiny, distinct silhouette of her unborn grandson. Her thin, frail hands trembled as her fingers brushed over the image.

"A boy," Victoria whispered, her raspy voice thick with emotion. "A DeLuca boy..."

She looked up at Madeline. For the first time since they had met, the cold, terrifying matriarch didn't look like a mob queen. She looked like a tired, grateful old woman.

"Madeline," Victoria said softly, holding out her thin hand.

Madeline reached forward, taking the old woman's hand in hers.

"I spent forty years in this house believing that strength was built on cruelty," Victoria confessed, a tear slipping down her wrinkled cheek. "I thought my son needed a cold, calculating woman from a powerful family to survive. I was wrong."

She squeezed Madeline’s hand with surprising strength.

"You brought truth into this house, child," Victoria murmured. "You saved my son from a fourteen-year nightmare, and you gave me the only wish I had left before I die. Thank you."

Madeline smiled warmly, her eyes glistening. "He's going to know how much his grandmother loved him, Victoria."

Victoria turned her sharp blue eyes toward her son. "And you, Adrian... ensure you treat this girl like the treasure she is. If you ever cause her sorrow, I will come back from the grave to haunt you."

Adrian let out a quiet, genuine laugh—a sound so rare and warm that Madeline turned her head to look at him in delight.

"I will protect her with my life, Mother," Adrian promised softly. "Every single day."
