Chapter 5 - The Shadow of David Vance

The retaliatory strike did not come in the form of gunfire or midnight explosions. In the high-stakes chess match between Adriano Moretti and the legal establishment, the first move was executed through pure financial terror.

Forty-eight hours after Helena discovered the poisoned clause, David Vance received an emergency summons to the office of the Senior Managing Partner at Vance & Sterling. When he arrived, he found the executive boardroom occupied not by his senior partners, but by three high-ranking officials from the State Judicial Conduct Committee, accompanied by two federal auditors.

Every real estate deal David had managed over the past three years—including the asset transfers he had forced through during his divorce from Helena—was laid out on the marble table, tagged with yellow evidence markers.

At nine o'clock that evening, Helena was finishing a late-night review in her office when her private cell phone began ringing frantically. The caller ID displayed an unlisted number she recognized all too well.

She hesitated, then pressed answer. "Helena Selenus."

"What did you do?" David's voice came shrieking through the speaker, frantic, unraveled, and completely devoid of his usual arrogance. "What the hell did you tell them, Helena?!"

Helena leaned back in her leather executive chair, looking out at the glittering lights of the harbor. "I don't know what you're talking about, David."

"The Ethics Board froze my license an hour ago!" David panicked, the sound of papers rustling violently in the background. "The IRS just served grand jury subpoenas on my father's accounts! They know about the offshore accounts in Grand Cayman—the ones from the divorce settlement! Who gave them those banking records?!"

Helena felt a cold, sharp sense of clarity wash over her. She hadn't provided those records. She hadn't even known the Cayman accounts existed. But she knew a man who possessed the resources to unearth secrets buried five fathoms deep.

"You tried to slip a federal indictment clause into my client's contract, David," Helena said, her voice dropping into a tone of quiet, lethal calm. "You tried to use me as an unwitting accomplice to ruin a man you knew nothing about."

"He's a murderer, Helena!" David screamed into the phone. "Adriano Moretti is a monster! Do you really think you're safe with him? Do you think he cares about you or Clara? He's using you!"

"He provided a safe office for our daughter," Helena replied coldly. "He paid off my legal debts. And unlike you, David, when he makes a promise, he doesn't break it behind closed doors."

The office door opened quietly. Adriano stepped into the room, holding two glass tumblers of amber liquid. He saw her phone, noted her tense posture, and instantly understood who was on the line.

Without a word, Adriano walked over to her desk, took the phone gently from her hand, and placed it on speaker.

"David Vance," Adriano said calmly.

The frantic screaming on the other end of the line stopped instantly. The silence was absolute.

"M-Moretti?" David stuttered, his confidence collapsing into pathetic terror.

"Listen to me very carefully," Adriano said, leaning over the desk, his voice echoing through the quiet office like rolling thunder. "If you ever dial this number again, if you ever approach Helena or Clara, or if you even speak their names in public, I will not bother with the IRS or the Ethics Board."

He paused, letting the terrifying weight of the threat hang in the air.

"I will personally ensure that you vanish from this city so completely that your own family will forget what you looked like. Do you understand me?"

A whimpering, desperate sound came through the speaker. "Yes... yes, Mr. Moretti. I understand."

Adriano ended the call, tossed the phone onto the desk, and handed Helena one of the glass tumblers.

Helena took the glass, her hands trembling slightly—not from fear of David, but from the realization of how completely her life had become tied to the man standing beside her.

"He won't bother you again," Adriano said softly.

May you like

Helena looked down at the amber liquid, then up at his dark, handsome face. "You destroyed his entire life in forty-eight hours."

"He attempted to take you away from your daughter by putting you in the middle of a federal conspiracy," Adriano said, his storm-gray eyes softening as he looked down at her. "He got off easy."
