Chapter 9 - The Trial of Carmine Rossini

The fallout from the ambush at Pier 9 was swift, legal, and absolute.
While Adriano recovered from surgery in a private, heavily guarded wing of Saint Jude's Hospital, Helena did not sleep for seventy-two hours. She didn't use guns or explosives to strike back at the Rossini family; she used her intellect, her intimate knowledge of maritime law, and the massive ledger of evidence she had compiled over the past month.
On Friday morning, Helena stood in the center of Federal District Court Room 402, dressed in a sharp black pant-suit, her eyes dark with fatigue but burning with unbreakable resolve.
Sitting at the defense table across from her was Lord Carmine Rossini, flanked by five top-tier defense attorneys. Rossini was handcuffed, his face pale, his empire crumbling around him.
"Your Honor," Helena announced, her voice echoing clearly through the crowded courtroom. "The United States Attorney's Office, acting on evidence submitted by Moretti Logistics, hereby presents seventy-four counts of racketeering, illegal port seizure, attempted murder, and corporate extortion against Carmine Rossini and his associates."
Rossini's chief counsel leapt to his feet. "Objection! Your Honor, Miss Selenus is a biased party! She is employed by Adriano Moretti!"
"I am the Principal Legal Counsel for Moretti Logistics, Your Honor," Helena corrected instantly, turning to face the judge with total authority. "And every document I have submitted is certified by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, backed by wiretap transcripts, port authority security video, and forensically verified bank statements from offshore accounts in Grand Cayman."
She walked up to the defense table, dropping a heavy three-inch binder directly in front of Carmine Rossini.
"Lord Rossini," Helena said, leaning over the desk until she was looking directly into the old man's terrified eyes. "Your hitmen failed at Pier 9. Your legal team failed in paragraph seventeen. And your time in this city is officially over."
The judge slammed his gavel down with a loud, final crack. "Bail is denied. The defendant will remain in federal custody pending trial."
As federal marshals led a trembling Carmine Rossini out of the courtroom in chains, the gallery exploded into a frenzy of camera flashes and shouting reporters.
Helena walked out of the courthouse alone, stepping into the bright afternoon sunlight. Standing at the bottom of the marble steps was a sleek black sedan.
The rear door opened. Adriano stood up, resting lightly on a silver-tipped cane, dressed in a tailored gray suit. He was pale, but his gray eyes were bright, filled with warmth and absolute reverence as he watched her descend the steps.
"I heard about the courtroom performance," Adriano said as she reached him. "Angela said the U.S. Attorney looked like he wanted to hire you on the spot."
"I told him I was already under exclusive contract," Helena replied, a soft smile finally breaking through her exhaustion.
Adriano stepped closer, using his cane for support, and pulled a single red rose from his coat pocket, handing it to her. "The Rossini syndicate is finished. The city is secure."

"And us?" Helena asked softly, looking down at the rose. "Are we secure?"
"Come home with me," Adriano whispered, reaching out to take her hand. "And let's find out."
