Chapter 8 - The Price of Loyalty

The firefight lasted less than seven minutes, but to Helena, huddled on the floor of the armored car, it felt like an eternity carved from pure terror.
She listened to the deafening cracks of Adriano's pistol, the heavy tactical shouts of his bodyguards, and the agonizing screams of falling gunmen. She watched through the cracked, bullet-riddled window as shadows moved frantically through the dark warehouse, punctuated by blinding muzzle flashes.
When silence finally returned, it was sudden and suffocating.
"Helena!" Adriano's voice called out from the darkness.
She scrambled out of the car, her heels discarded somewhere in the vehicle, her feet cold against the concrete floor.
Adriano was standing twenty feet away, surrounded by four of his surviving guards. Three hitmen in dark tactical gear lay motionless on the floor around them. Adriano was breathing heavily, his gun lowered, his face covered in soot and rain.
"Adriano!" she cried, running across the concrete and throwing her arms around his waist.
He held her tightly with his right arm, burying his face in her hair. But as she pressed against him, her hand brushed against his left side, coming away wet with thick, warm crimson.
She pulled back in horror. "You're hit!"
"It's just a graze," Adriano muttered, though his knees buckled slightly, his weight suddenly shifting heavily onto her shoulder.
Marco rushed over, grabbing Adriano's other arm. "We've got an emergency medical team waiting at the safehouse in the North District. Move!"
They loaded Adriano into a backup SUV that had broken through the rear warehouse gates. Helena refused to leave his side, sitting in the back seat and pressing a thick wad of sterile gauze firmly against the bleeding wound in his flank.
"You lied to me," she wept, tears cutting clean tracks through the soot on her cheeks as she applied pressure. "You said you were fine."
Adriano laid his head back against the leather headrest, his gray eyes looking up at her with a faint, weak smile. "I had to keep you calm, Counselor. A terrified lawyer makes bad tactical decisions."
"This isn't funny, Adriano!" she sobbed, pressing harder against the wound. "You could have died!"
He reached up with a blood-stained hand and touched her face, his fingers gentle against her wet skin. "I couldn't die tonight, Helena."
"Why?"
May you like
"Because," he whispered, his voice failing as the blood loss took its toll, "I haven't taken you and Clara home yet."
His eyes closed, his hand slipping from her cheek as he lost consciousness.
