Chapter 10 - The View from the Top

Six months later.

Spring had arrived in Chicago. The ice on Lake Michigan had melted into shimmering turquoise waters, and the cherry trees in Grant Park were bursting into vivid pink blossoms.

The rooftop terrace of Whitmore Tower was once again filled with music.

This time, however, there were no two hundred fake corporate guests. There were no lifestyle magazine photographers, no five-tiered almond cakes, and no high-fashion galas.

There were only thirty people—true friends, colleagues, and the team of agents who had worked alongside Elena for years.

A simple wooden arch wrapped in wild spring greenery stood against the backdrop of the blue horizon.

Daniel stood near the arch, dressed in a sharp navy suit, his posture relaxed, a quiet, profound happiness shining in his dark eyes. Beside him stood a new assistant—a young, honest tech worker he had promoted from his engineering division.

The acoustic guitarist played a gentle, flowing melody.

The glass doors opened.

Elena stepped out onto the terrace. She walked entirely on her own, her recovery complete, wearing an elegant, simple silk gown that caught the afternoon sunlight. She held a small bouquet of white lilies—Eleanor Whitmore’s favorite flower.

Her eyes remained fixed on Daniel as she walked down the short aisle.

When she reached him, Daniel took both of her hands in his.

"You look beautiful," he whispered.

"No red dress this time," she teased softly, a bright, radiant smile filling her face.

"Thank God for that," Daniel chuckled.

The justice of the peace stepped forward, smiling at the small, intimate gathering.

"We are gathered here today," the judge began, "not to join two corporate empires, but to celebrate a bond forged in truth, tested by fire, and proven by an unwavering loyalty."

As the vows were spoken, a gentle breeze swept off the lake, rustling the green leaves of the arch above them.

When the time came, Daniel slid a simple, elegant band of platinum and diamonds onto Elena’s finger. Elena slid a matching band onto his.

"I now pronounce you husband and wife," the judge announced. "You may kiss the bride."

Daniel pulled Elena close, his arms wrapping securely around her waist, and kissed her deeply. The small crowd erupted into warm, genuine applause.

Down on the floor near their feet, Atlas—the retired search-and-rescue German Shepherd Elena had adopted during her rehabilitation—let out a happy, sharp bark, causing everyone to laugh.

Later that evening, as the sun dipped below the western horizon, painting the Chicago sky in brilliant shades of amber, violet, and gold, Daniel and Elena stood together at the rooftop railing.

Daniel wrapped his arm around her shoulders, pulling her against his side. Elena rested her head against his chest, listening to the steady, strong rhythm of his heartbeat.

Far below, the city lights were beginning to flicker on, glittering like a sea of fallen stars.

"Three floors down," Elena murmured softly, pointing toward the steel supports near the corner. "That's where I fell."

Daniel tightened his grip around her, pressing a soft kiss against her hair. "And this is where we stood up."

They stood together on the thirty-second floor, looking out over the endless city, knowing that no secret, no danger, and no lie could ever tear down what they had built together. They were no longer master and servant, billionaire and agent.

They were simply two souls who had found their home at the very top of the world.
