Chapter 6 - The Betrayal

Daniel slowly stood up from the chair, placing his body squarely between Noah and Elena’s hospital bed. His mind raced, re-evaluating every interaction, every meeting, every single piece of information he had shared with his executive assistant over the past five years.

"Noah," Daniel said, keeping his voice dangerously calm. "You were the one who took the photograph in the kitchen."

Noah gave a small, resigned shrug, setting his briefcase down on the small visitor’s table. "Victoria was getting sloppy. She was letting her personal disdain for the staff blind her. I gave her that photograph six months ago to push her over the edge. I needed her focused on Elena so she wouldn't look at me."

"You sold out the company," Daniel said, his fists clenching at his sides. "I gave you everything, Noah. Equity, trust, access. You were my right hand."

"And you were a idealist who let billions of dollars in military applications sit on server shelves while you played philanthropist!" Noah snapped, his calm demeanor finally cracking to reveal a sharp, bitter arrogance. "Arthur Hale offered me fifty million dollars for the Aegis source code. Fifty million, Daniel! Do you have any idea how long it would take me to earn that working for your humble little empire?"

Noah reached into his jacket and pulled out a small, silenced semi-automatic pistol.

"When Victoria told me she caught Elena snooping in your private server room tonight, I knew the agent was burnt," Noah continued, raising the weapon. "Victoria thought she was solving her little romantic rival problem by pushing her off the roof. I actually helped her disable the security camera feed. I thought the fall would take care of the FBI once and for all."

"She survived," Daniel said, taking an incremental step toward Noah, shielding Elena completely.

"A temporary inconvenience," Noah said coldly, aiming the pistol directly at Daniel’s chest. "You see, Daniel, the narrative is already written. The police are waiting downstairs. Victoria’s lawyers are spinning a story about a tragic accident caused by an unstable server. If you die here—a tragic attack by a rogue maid who then succumbed to her injuries—Arthur Hale and I take full control of Sentinel CyberSystems tomorrow morning."

Elena’s hand reached up from the bed, weakly grabbing the hem of Daniel’s shirt. "Daniel... no..."

"You made one mistake, Noah," Daniel said softly, staring down the barrel of the gun without a single flinch.

Noah raised an eyebrow. "Oh? And what was that?"

"You forgot who built the security infrastructure in this hospital," Daniel replied.

Suddenly, the overhead sprinkler system exploded into a roaring deluge of icy water. The room was bathed in flashing crimson emergency strobes, and a deafening, high-decibel fire alarm shattered the silence.

The sudden shock of cold water hit Noah directly in the face, causing him to instinctively flinch and lower the weapon for a fraction of a second.

It was the only opening Daniel needed.
