Chapter 8 - The Downfall of Hale Global

Twenty-four hours later.
The rain over Chicago had cleared, leaving behind a cold, brilliant sky that illuminated the glass towers of the Loop.
In the grand penthouse suite of the Ritz-Carlton, Victoria Hale stood before a floor-to-ceiling mirror, frantically adjusting her diamond earrings. Her father, Arthur Hale, sat on a leather sofa nearby, pouring himself his fourth glass of scotch, his hands trembling violently.
"Stop drinking, Dad!" Victoria snapped, her voice shrill and high-pitched. "The police interviewed me twice yesterday! I told them she fell! As long as we stick to the story, Daniel will come around! He’s just in shock!"
"He’s not in shock, Victoria," Arthur said, his voice hollow and broken. "Look at the television."
Victoria turned toward the massive flat-screen mounted above the fireplace.
A breaking news banner flashed across the screen in bold crimson text:
FEDERAL ARREST WARRANTS ISSUED FOR HALE GLOBAL EXECUTIVES SENTINEL CYBERSYSTEMS EXPOSES MULTI-BILLION DOLLAR ESPIONAGE RING
The screen cut to a live press conference outside Federal Plaza. Standing behind a podium surrounded by dozens of microphoned reporters was Daniel Whitmore. He wore a crisp dark suit, a small white bandage covering the cut on his temple.
Beside him stood the Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Chicago Field Office.
"For the past six months," Daniel’s voice echoed clearly through the penthouse speakers, calm, authoritative, and utterly terrifying, "Sentinel CyberSystems has been working in direct coordination with the Federal Bureau of Investigation to expose a massive foreign espionage scheme. Today, federal warrants were executed against Arthur Hale, Victoria Hale, and former Sentinel employee Noah Grant."
Victoria dropped her diamond earring onto the plush carpet. Her breath hitched in her throat. "No... no, this isn't happening..."
"Furthermore," Daniel continued, staring directly into the main news camera with an icy focus that chilled her to the bone, "I am personally funding a fifty-million-dollar trust fund to support victims of corporate corruption, named in honor of Agent Elena Vance—the brave investigator who risked her life to bring these criminals to light."
A sudden, deafening crash echoed from the penthouse entryway.
The heavy mahogany doors were blown inward by a tactical entry team. A dozen FBI agents in heavy armor swarmed into the suite, their automatic rifles raised, red laser sights painting the walls.
"FBI! Hands where we can see them! Don't move!"
Victoria backed away toward the floor-to-ceiling windows, her hands trembling, her beautiful face ruined by pure terror. "Dad! Do something!"
Arthur Hale slowly set his scotch glass down, burying his face in his hands, weeping silently.
A senior female agent stepped past the tactical team, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from her belt. She walked directly up to Victoria.
"Victoria Hale," the agent said coldly. "You are under arrest for attempted murder, obstruction of justice, and federal conspiracy."
As the cold steel clicked around Victoria’s manicured wrists, she looked out the window toward Whitmore Tower in the distance.

She had wanted to rule that building as its queen.
Instead, her jealousy and greed had built her a cage she would never escape.
