Chapter 5 - The Hospital Room

The Intensive Care Unit was pitch-black except for the dim green luminescence of the heart monitors and the rhythmic, rhythmic hiss of the ventilator assisting Elena’s breathing.

Daniel stepped quietly into the room, closing the heavy acoustic door behind him. He walked over to the side of the bed and looked down at the woman lying beneath the thin white blankets.

Her dark hair was spread across the pillow, her face pale and swollen with dark bruises along her jaw line. A thick bandage wrapped around her forehead, and her left leg was immobilized in a heavy traction cast. She looked infinitely fragile, stripped of the quiet, composed authority she had maintained for three years.

Daniel gently pulled a chair over and sat beside the bed. He reached out, carefully placing his hand over her cool, uninjured fingers.

"I’m sorry, Elena," he whispered, his voice thick with uncharacteristic emotion. "I brought them into my house. I brought them into your path."

The cardiac monitor gave a quick double-beep.

Elena’s eyelids fluttered. She let out a soft, painful groan, her dark eyes slowly opening, unfocusing against the dim green light of the room. She turned her head slightly, her gaze locking onto Daniel’s face.

"Daniel..." her voice was a dry, raspy thread.

"Don't try to move," Daniel said gently, leaning closer. "You're at Northwestern Memorial. You're safe. My security team is controlling the entire floor."

Elena swallowed hard, her hand feebly twitching against his grip. "The drive... did you... find..."

"I found it," Daniel confirmed softly. "I know who you are, Agent Vance. I know what Arthur Hale was doing to my company. And I know why Victoria pushed you."

A faint, bitter shadow of a smile touched Elena’s cracked lips. "I was... so close. I needed... one more authorization log... from your study."

"Why didn't you come to me?" Daniel asked, his eyes burning with genuine pain. "Three years, Elena. You lived in my home. You knew I wasn't part of their corruption. Why didn't you trust me?"

Elena closed her eyes for a brief moment, breathing shallowly through the pain of her broken ribs. When she opened them again, her gaze was razor-sharp despite the medication clouding her mind.

"Because... Arthur Hale wasn't working alone, Daniel," she whispered, her fingers suddenly tightening around his with surprising strength. "He had an insider... inside Sentinel. Someone who gave him... your master key."

Daniel went rigid. "Who?"

Before Elena could answer, the glass door of the ICU suite slid open with a soft hiss.

A man stepped into the room. He wore a crisp dark suit, his tie perfectly straight, holding a sleek black briefcase.

It was Noah Grant.

"Daniel," Noah said, his voice entirely devoid of its usual warmth. He closed the door behind him, dragging a heavy metal bolt into place, locking them inside. "I told you not to look too deep into those logs."
