Chapter 10 - The Red Horizon

Six months later.

The summer sun was setting over the Boston Harbor, painting the sky in breathtaking shades of deep crimson, gold, and violet.

On the top floor of the newly opened Harbor Crown Tower, the private penthouse balcony offered a sweeping, panoramic view of the entire city. The harbor below was calm, filled with luxury yachts and small sailboats drifting lazily across the water.

Claire stood at the glass railing, wearing a simple, comfortable white silk dress that blew softly in the warm evening breeze.

Her life had changed completely over the last half-year. The basement clinic had been transformed into a fully licensed, open-access trauma research center funded entirely by Crosswell Development, with Claire appointed as its Executive Director. Her father's medical debts were entirely paid off, and Rebecca had been enrolled in a top-tier art design program in Vermont, her life finally stabilized and secure.

Two strong arms wrapped gently around Claire’s waist from behind.

Damian pulled her back against his broad chest, resting his chin comfortably on her shoulder. He smelled of sandalwood, fresh ocean air, and the clean warmth of the evening.

"You're thinking again," Damian murmured into her dark hair, his hands resting over her stomach.

Claire leaned back into his solid heat, smiling as she placed her hands over his. "I was just thinking about the first night I came up to this penthouse."

"The crimson dress," Damian said softly, a quiet laugh rumbling through his chest. "I almost had a heart attack when you walked through that door."

"You looked like you wanted to fire me."

"I looked like a man who realized he was completely helpless," Damian corrected her, turning her gently in his arms so she was facing him.

He looked down at her with an intensity that still made her breath hitch, but the cold danger of his past was now tempered by a deep, unshakeable devotion.

He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, navy velvet box.

Claire’s heart took a sharp, erratic leap against her ribs. "Damian..."

Damian didn't drop to one knee. He held her gaze, his dark blue eyes completely open, vulnerable, and clear. He opened the box to reveal a flawless, oval-cut crimson diamond set in a minimalist band of polished platinum.

"For two years, you kept my secret," Damian whispered, taking the ring from the velvet box. "You saved my men, you saved my company, and you saved me from becoming the monster everyone thought I was."

He took her left hand, sliding the stunning red diamond onto her ring finger. It fit perfectly.

"I don't want an invisible life anymore, Claire," Damian said, his voice raw with emotion. "I want a life with you. In the light. In the open. Forever."

Claire looked down at the gleaming red diamond, then up into the face of the man who had turned her quiet, hidden world into a brilliant, magnificent reality.

Tears of pure joy welled in her hazel eyes. She smiled, stepping up on her tiptoes, and wrapped her arms around his neck.

"Who gave you permission to sound so romantic?" she whispered softly against his lips.

Damian laughed, pulling her tight against his heart, his mouth meeting hers in a deep, passionate kiss as the sun finally dipped below the horizon, bathing the entire city of Boston in a beautiful, unbreakable crimson light.
