Chapter 4 - The 40th Floor

The quiet service corridor behind the gallery was stark, sterile, and bathed in the harsh red glow of emergency backup lights.

Damian pulled Claire through a heavy fire door leading to the private express elevator reserved for penthouse executives. He slapped his master keycard against the scanner.

The digital pad hummed, but the screen flashed a grim, flickering message: SYSTEM OVERRIDE - ACCESS DENIED.

"They've hard-coded the security mainframe from the 40th floor," Damian growled, his jaw clenching. He reached inside his charcoal tuxedo jacket, unholstered a sleek, matte-black SIG Sauer P322, and checked the chamber with a crisp, practiced mechanical click.

Claire stared at the weapon. She had treated dozens of gunshot wounds caused by weapons like that, but seeing it in Damian’s large hands, illuminated by the blood-red emergency lights, made the reality of his world crash down on her with brutal force.

"You can't go up there alone," Claire said, her voice shaking slightly. "He has armed men."

Damian looked at her, his dark eyes cold and focused. "I'm not going up there to negotiate, Claire. I'm going up there to clear my building." He pointed down the long hallway toward a reinforced steel door. "That door leads to the secure loading dock. My driver is waiting in an armored sedan. Go down, get in the car, and stay there."

"No," Claire said firmly.

Damian paused, his eyebrows pulling together in disbelief. "No?"

"I am the lead medical officer on duty tonight," Claire said, taking a step toward him, her crimson silk gown trailing over the concrete floor. "You told me you needed someone who notices things. If Mercer’s men are in the main control room, they've overridden the life-safety protocols for the entire building. There are five hundred civilians in that ballroom below us. If the fire suppression systems or ventilation grids are cut, people will die."

Damian stared at her for two long seconds. "You could be killed."

"So could you," Claire replied without blinking. "And if you get shot up there, who’s going to stop you from bleeding out on the carpet?"

A slow, dangerous smile crept onto Damian’s lips. It was dark, lethal, and devastatingly handsome.

"Follow my exact instructions," Damian commanded, turning toward the heavy reinforced door that led into the central stairwell. "You stay behind me. If I tell you to drop, you hit the floor. Understand?"

"Understood."

They stepped into the concrete stairwell. Forty flights of stairs spiraled upward into the darkness above.

They climbed rapidly. Claire pulled the bottom hem of her red silk gown up in one hand, her heels clicking rhythmically against the concrete steps as she pushed her body to keep pace with Damian’s long, powerful strides. Her lungs burned, her heart battered her ribs, but she refused to slow down.

When they reached the landing for the 40th floor, Damian held up a single hand, signaling for absolute silence.

He pressed his ear against the heavy steel service door.

From the other side came the low, muffled sound of men arguing in harsh, accented voices, accompanied by the rapid clatter of computer keypads.

Damian reached down, grabbing the steel handle. He looked back at Claire one last time, his dark eyes flashing with a silent warning.

He pulled the door open, stepped into the dark control room, and raised his gun.
