Chapter 5 - Blood on the Mainframe

The 40th-floor mainframe room was a high-tech nerve center lined with dozens of glowing blue server racks and floor-to-ceiling monitoring screens.

Three men in dark tactical jackets were crouched around the central terminal. Standing over them was Viktor Vance, holding a heavy submachine gun, a cell phone pressed to his ear.

"I don't care about the collateral!" Vance was shouting into the phone. "Cut the secondary power feeds! Lock the ballroom fire doors from the outside and set the thermal override to—"

Vance never finished the sentence.

Damian fired twice in rapid, terrifying succession.

The suppressed double-tap broke the air with two soft, coughing sounds—ptht, ptht.

The two men sitting at the computer terminal collapsed forward onto the glowing keypads instantly, their bodies going completely limp.

Viktor Vance reacted with terrifying speed. He dove sideways behind a heavy steel server rack, raking the doorway with a wild burst of automatic gunfire. Sparks erupted from the ceiling as bullets tore through the drywall and shattered the overhead lights, plunging the room into chaotic, flickering shadows.

"Damian!" Claire screamed, diving to the floor behind a reinforced concrete pillar as bullets whipped through the air above her head.

Damian had already rolled behind a steel desk near the entrance. He didn't fire back wildly. He waited, his breathing perfectly controlled, his eyes tracking the reflection of Vance’s shoes in the polished glass of a server cabinet across the room.

"You're too late, Cross!" Vance shouted from behind the servers, his voice laced with manic adrenaline. "The malware is already loaded into the building’s central operating system! In five minutes, the ventilation system will flood the ballroom with carbon monoxide from the main generators! Mercer is going to take your building, your reputation, and your life!"

Claire, crouched low behind her pillar, looked at the glowing terminal ten feet away.

On the central screen, a red countdown timer was flashing: 04:12... 04:11... 04:10...

Above the timer, a complex string of system overrides was running through the HVAC controls. Claire recognized the software layout immediately—it was the exact same hospital ventilation security protocol used at Mass General to isolate contagious wards during bio-contaminant outbreaks.

"Damian!" Claire called out, her voice remarkably clear despite the gunfire. "The software isn't custom malware! It’s a standard hospital isolation protocol! It requires a local physical bypass key!"

Vance’s head snapped toward her pillar. "Who the hell is that?!"

Vance stepped out from behind his server rack, aiming his weapon toward Claire’s hiding spot.

"Look at me, Viktor!" Damian roared, stepping deliberately into the open center aisle of the room.

Vance turned his weapon toward Damian, but he was a second too slow.

Damian fired three precise shots. One struck Vance in the right shoulder, spinning him around; the second hit him in the thigh; and the third tore through his wrist, knocking the submachine gun from his hand as it clattered across the slick floor.

Vance collapsed onto his back, groaning in agony, clutching his shattered shoulder as blood pools began to spread beneath him.

Damian walked forward, his gun still aimed at Vance’s chest. He reached down, kicked the submachine gun away, and looked over at Claire.

"Clear," Damian said quietly.

Claire didn't hesitate. She scrambled out from behind the pillar, her red dress torn at the hem and covered in drywall dust, and sprinted straight to the central computer terminal.

"Three minutes!" she gasped, her fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard. "He’s initiated a closed-loop scrub! If I don't enter the override code, the fans will reverse!"

"Can you stop it?" Damian asked, stepping up behind her, his eyes scanning the security screens monitoring the ballroom below.

"I need the administrator bypass key," Claire said frantically, her eyes scanning the terminal screen. "It’s an eight-digit hexadecimal sequence!"

Damian reached down, grabbed Viktor Vance by his collar, and dragged the bleeding man up against the server rack. He pressed the hot barrel of his gun directly beneath Vance’s jaw.

"The code, Viktor," Damian said, his voice dropping into a terrifyingly calm whisper. "Give it to her, or I put a hole through your tongue."

Vance choked, coughing up blood, his eyes wild with terror. "7-7-Alpha-9-4-Delta!"

Claire typed the digits furiously into the flashing prompt: 7-7-A-9-4-D.

She slammed the enter key.

The red flashing screens instantly turned a calm, solid blue. A quiet mechanical chime echoed through the room: SYSTEM OVERRIDE SUCCESSFUL - NORMAL VENTILATION RESTORED.

Claire collapsed back against the terminal desk, her hands shaking violently, her chest heaving as she let out a long, ragged breath.

Damian let go of Vance’s collar, allowing the unconscious enforcer to slump back onto the floor. He turned to Claire, his dark eyes burning with an intense, raw emotion she had never seen before.

He walked over to her, wrapped his large hands around her waist, and lifted her effortlessly off the floor, pulling her close against his chest.

"You are incredible," he whispered, his face burying into the curve of her neck.

Claire wrapped her arms around his broad shoulders, holding onto him tight as the adrenaline of the fight finally began to fade into the dark, quiet room.
