Chapter 8 - The Federal Trap

Within twenty minutes, the private elevator doors of the penthouse opened with a soft chime.
Damian stepped out into the living room.
He looked immaculate—wearing a fresh navy suit and a white silk tie—but his face was grim, his blue eyes hard as flint. Behind him walked his chief legal counsel, Arthur Vance, a gray-haired man carrying two leather briefcases full of legal documents.
Claire stepped forward, her hands clutched tightly together over her casual clothes. "Damian... I saw the news."
Damian stopped, looking at her with a gentle, reassuring calm that belied the storm raging outside his building.
"It’s a desperate move, Claire," Damian said smoothly, walking over to her and placing his hands on her shoulders. "Mercer’s people had a fallback plan. Before Mercer was taken off his boat last night, his attorneys delivered a corrupted hard drive of old financial ledgers to the U.S. Attorney's office."
"Are the charges real?" Claire asked, looking directly into his eyes.
"Some of them," Damian answered with absolute honesty. "Ten years ago, when I was building this company from the dirt of South Boston, I did things that were necessary to survive. But the wire fraud and conspiracy charges are completely fabricated. Mercer’s lawyers doctored the ledgers to make it look like I was transferring funds to offshore enforcement groups."
Arthur Vance stepped forward, laying a thick file on the dining table. "The problem, Mr. Cross, is that the federal judge signed an emergency freeze on all liquid accounts. You have no access to your legal defense funds, and the FBI has set up a perimeter around the building. They expect to serve the arrest warrant within two hours."
Claire looked at the documents on the table. Her trained forensic eyes—the same eyes that had spent two years looking at complex medical ledgers and trauma charts—locked onto the financial flowcharts.
"Let me see those ledgers," Claire said sudden, her tone shifting instantly into her calm, professional voice.
Arthur Vance frowned, looking at her with skepticism. "Miss Bennett, these are complex federal financial exhibits—"
"I was top of my class in clinical administration, Mr. Vance," Claire interrupted sharply, stepping past him to grab the file. "I spent three years auditing hospital billing ledgers for Mass General before I took the clinic job. I know how doctoring financial entries works."
She flipped open the heavy file, her hazel eyes scanning the lines of numbers with terrifying speed.
For ten minutes, the room was silent save for the sound of turning pages. Damian watched her silently, a look of profound respect and quiet fascination in his eyes.
Suddenly, Claire stopped. Her finger pressed down on a row of highlighted transactions dated three months prior.
"Look here," Claire said, pointing to a series of wire transfers routed through a bank in Saint Kitts. "These transfers are listed as payments to an enforcement proxy called 'Egis Tactical'."
"That's the main charge," Arthur Vance noted. "They're claiming Damian paid hitmen."
"They didn't pay hitmen," Claire said, her voice rising with sudden excitement. "Look at the swift codes, Mr. Vance! The bank routing prefix isn't Saint Kitts—it's the internal clearing house code for the Massachusetts State Medical Board!"
Damian leaned over her shoulder, his dark eyes focusing on the numbers she was pointing to. "What does that mean?"
"It means this wasn't an offshore payment to hitmen," Claire declared, looking up at Damian with a brilliant, victorious smile. "This was a bulk purchasing wire for the high-dose trauma medications and surgical equipment used in your basement clinic! The ledgers weren't altered by Mercer's lawyers—they were miscategorized by the U.S. Attorney’s office to fit their racketeering narrative!"
Arthur Vance gasped, diving for the file, his eyes scanning the routing codes. "My God... she’s right! It’s a pharmaceutical purchase order! The prosecution's core exhibit is fundamentally flawed!"

Damian looked at Claire, a sudden, powerful laugh breaking from his throat. He grabbed her face in both hands and kissed her fiercely on the lips.
"You really are my secret weapon," he whispered against her mouth.
