Chapter 5 - The War in the Basement

The air in the sub-basement of the clinic smelled of wet concrete, oil, and diesel exhaust.

Dante descended the concrete stairs like a silent wraith, two of his top tactical enforcers following right behind him with suppressed automatic submachine guns.

At the far end of the underground parking bay, a silver Mercedes van sat idling, its rear doors wide open.

Two men in dark trench coats stood near the back of the van. One of them held a portable medical incubator covered in a dark thermal blanket.

Dante’s blood burned like liquid fire.

His son was inside that box.

“Take the drivers,” Dante whispered to his men. “Leave the man holding the child alive.”

Without waiting for an answer, Dante stepped out into the open bay, firing two precise rounds from his heavy handgun.

The head driver collapsed instantly beside the Mercedes, a bullet through his head. The second guard turned, pulling a weapon from his coat, but Dante’s enforcers opened fire with a tight burst of suppressed rounds, dropping him onto the concrete pavement.

The third man—Julian Valenti’s chief lieutenant, a scarred killer named Marco—spotted Dante and immediately backed up against the van, holding the portable incubator in front of his chest like a human shield.

“Step back, Cross!” Marco yelled, his voice echoing in the concrete garage. “You shoot me, and this thermal box hits the pavement! The kid won't survive the drop!”

Dante stopped ten feet away.

Rainwater dripped through a crack in the ceiling above, splashing rhythmically against the stone floor.

Dante raised his weapon, his arm as steady as a mountain, his hazel eyes completely devoid of mercy.

“You’re holding my son, Marco,” Dante said softly.

“Julian’s orders!” Marco shouted, sweating profusely despite the cold garage air. “The Valenti family takes your heir, and you accept the shipping deal! That was the trade!”

“Julian made a mistake,” Dante said calmly, taking one step forward.

“I’ll drop him, Dante! I swear to God I’ll drop him!” Marco screamed, tightening his grip on the handle of the incubator.

Dante didn't answer with words.

With terrifying speed, Dante stepped sideways, drawing a small, concealed throw knife from his belt, and drove it directly through Marco’s right shoulder.

Marco let out a shriek of pain, his right arm going completely limp. As the incubator began to slide from his grip, Dante lunged forward, catching the heavy plastic box in his left arm before it hit the ground.

With his right hand, Dante shoved his gun under Marco’s jaw and pulled the trigger.

The muffled shot echoed through the basement. Marco collapsed onto the wet pavement like a sack of bricks.

Dante dropped to his knees on the concrete floor, setting the incubator down gently.

His hands, which had taken dozens of lives over ten years of mafia warfare, trembled uncontrollably as he unlatched the clear plastic hood of the thermal box.

Inside, wrapped in a blue hospital blanket, lay a small, dark-haired baby boy.

The child opened his tiny dark eyes, looking up at Dante, letting out a soft, tiny whimpering sound.

Dante reached in, his large, scarred hand gently cradling the back of his son’s tiny head. He looked down at the boy’s face—seeing his own jawline, his own dark hair, his own blood staring back at him.

Tears of fierce, possessive love filled Dante’s eyes.

“I’m here, son,” Dante whispered, his voice shaking with intense emotion as he lifted his heir into his broad arms. “I’ve got you.”
