Chapter 9 - The Lake House Sanctuary

Three days later, the sun shone brightly over the private shores of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.

The Cross family’s lake house was a sprawling stone-and-timber estate surrounded by hundreds of acres of dense pine forest, sitting right on the edge of the crystal-clear water.

In the master bedroom on the second floor, sunlight flooded through the wide windows, painting the soft linen sheets in warm shades of gold.

Nora sat in a comfortable armchair near the window, holding her son—whom they had named Leo—as he nursed quietly under a soft blanket.

She wore a simple grey cashmere sweater, her dark hair tied back in a loose braid. The pale, exhausted look from the clinic was gone, replaced by a soft, healthy glow of maternal peace.

A quiet knock sounded at the door.

Dante stepped into the room, wearing a simple black sweater and jeans, looking remarkably relaxed for a man who had just dismantled an entire crime syndicate in seventy-two hours.

He walked over quietly, leaning down to kiss the top of Leo’s soft head, then pulled a wooden chair beside her and sat down.

“How is he?” Dante asked softly.

“He’s perfect,” Nora smiled, looking down at her son’s peaceful face. “Dr. Harding’s replacement checked him this morning. His lungs are clear, his weight is up, and he’s thriving.”

Dante reached out, his large, warm hand covering hers on the arm of the chair.

“The Valenti assets have been completely absorbed,” Dante reported quietly. “The shipping lanes are secure, the council has accepted my terms, and Vivian’s trial is set for next month. She will receive thirty years without parole.”

Nora looked at him, her dark eyes thoughtful. “And the Cross family?”

Dante took a slow breath, looking out the window at the blue lake.

“I resigned from the executive council yesterday, Nora,” Dante revealed softly.

Nora blinked, surprised. “You what?”

“I handed the daily operations of the Midwest territories to my brother, Gabriel,” Dante said, looking back into her eyes with an absolute, unwavering devotion. “I spent ten years believing that power was the only way to keep my family safe. But the night you bled alone in that clinic, I realized that power means nothing if I lose the only woman who gives my life meaning.”

Nora felt a warm surge of emotion fill her chest, tears pricking the corners of her eyes.

“I was wrong to leave you that night, Nora,” Dante whispered, his voice cracking with genuine remorse. “I was a fool. I spent four years treating our marriage like a business contract, keeping you in a glass box because I was afraid my world would destroy you.”

He brought her hand to his lips, kissing her knuckles with a tender reverence that made her entire body tremble.

“I don't want an empire, Nora,” Dante swore softly. “I only want you, and our son.”
