Chapter 6 - The Gathering Storm

Thirty minutes later, the gold suite on the third floor of the clinic was completely secured by thirty heavily armed Cross family soldiers.
Nora sat on the edge of her bed, her shoulders wrapped in a warm wool blanket.
The door opened, and Dante stepped inside.
He wasn't wearing his suit jacket anymore. His white shirt was stained with rain and dark smudges of engine grease, but in his arms, he held the swaddled blue bundle with a gentleness that seemed entirely foreign to a man of his violent reputation.
Nora stood up from the bed, her breath catching in her throat.
Dante walked over to her slowly, stopping two feet away. He didn't speak. He simply lowered his arms, presenting the infant to her.
Nora reached out, her hands shaking as she pulled back the edge of the blue blanket.
The baby opened his dark eyes, settling instantly against the warm skin of her chest. There was no Valenti mark on his neck. His skin was smooth, perfect, and healthy.
Nora buried her face against her son’s soft head, sobbing openly, tears of profound relief pouring down her cheeks.
“He’s safe, Nora,” Dante whispered softly, standing beside her like a iron wall. “Nobody will ever touch him again.”
Nora held her child tight, wiping her eyes with the corner of her blanket. She looked up at Dante, her expression hardening once again as the reality of their situation returned.
“And Vivian?” Nora asked coldly.
Dante’s eyes turned into pools of liquid ice. “Vivian is currently at the Meridian Club, waiting for Julian Valenti to confirm that the swap was successful.”
Nora looked down at her son, then back at her husband. “She thought she could use my child to destroy us. She thought she could take my place in your life while I bled alone in this room.”
“She was wrong,” Dante said.
“I want her ruined, Dante,” Nora said, her voice dropping into a register of pure, lethal steel that matched his own. “I don't just want her dead. I want her to watch everything she built turn to ash before she dies.”
Dante looked at his wife—seeing for the first time the formidable, fierce woman beneath her quiet elegance. He realized then that he had spent four years trying to protect a woman who didn't need a protector; she needed a partner.
“Eli!” Dante called out to the hallway.
Eli stepped into the room instantly, bowing his head. “Yes, Don Dante?”
“Take Nora and my son to the lake house in Geneva,” Dante commanded. “Deploy forty men around the perimeter. If a single fly approaches the gates without my authorization, kill it.”
“Understood, boss,” Eli nodded.

Dante turned back to Nora, reaching out to gently touch the edge of her cheek. This time, she didn't pull away.
“Go to the lake house and rest, mia cara,” Dante promised softly, his eyes burning with an unholy light. “I have an empire to clean.”
