Chapter 2 - The Serpent's Nest

The storm rolling over Lake Michigan brought torrential rain and gale-force winds that battered the glass skyscrapers of downtown Chicago. In a private, dimly lit dining room on the top floor of the elite Blackstone Club, Julian Vance sat cutting into a rare filet mignon.

Across from him sat Elena Rostova, sipping a vintage Cabernet. She was dressed in a sleek red dress, her dark hair pinned back with diamond clips.

"Is everything in position?" Julian asked, setting his knife down with a soft metallic click.

"Saint Jude's Hospital has three of our security guards stationed at the maternity ward doors," Elena said smoothly, a small, triumphant smile curving her red lips. "The moment Claire Vale checks in under her false name, the attending physician—whom we paid two hundred thousand dollars—will administer the pitocin. Her blood pressure is already dangerously high. The medical report will read 'sudden severe eclampsia leading to fatal cardiac arrest during labor.'"

"And the baby?"

"The baby will be delivered via emergency C-section," Elena continued coldly. "I will be waiting in the adjacent suite. Judge Sterling’s clerk has already signed the emergency protective custody papers granting me full temporary guardianship based on my 'established relationship' with Adrian. Adrian will be arrested within twelve hours on manufactured racketeering charges before he even knows his daughter exists."

Julian picked up his glass and raised it. "To the end of the Vale dynasty."

Before Elena could raise her glass, the heavy oak doors of the private dining room exploded inward with a deafening CRACK.

The ornate door frame splintered into thousands of sharp wood fragments as two of Julian’s personal bodyguards came crashing backward across the carpet, unconscious and bleeding heavily.

Julian jumped up from his chair, reaching inside his jacket for his firearm, but he was three seconds too late.

Adrian Vale stepped through the ruined doorway.

He was drenched in rain, wearing a long charcoal coat that flew out behind him like the wings of a predatory bird. In his right hand, he held a heavy silenced pistol, pointed directly at Julian’s head. Behind him, Mason Reed and six heavily armed men in black tactical gear cleared the room with lethal, silent precision, disarming the remaining guards before they could pull their weapons.

Elena dropped her wine glass. It shattered against the white tablecloth, staining it dark red like fresh blood.

"Adrian," Elena gasped, her face draining of color. "What... what are you doing here?"

Adrian walked slowly toward the table. His eyes were devoid of emotion, cold and empty like the dark waters of the lake outside.

He didn't look at Julian. He walked directly up to Elena, stopped two inches from her chair, and pressed the cold, steel barrel of his suppressed pistol directly against the soft skin beneath her jawline.

"I spent forty-five minutes in the hidden room tonight, Elena," Adrian said softly, his baritone voice sending a chill straight down her spine. "I read the wiretap transcripts. I read the judge's payoff receipts. I saw the nursery Claire built while I was letting you pour poison into my ear."

Elena’s lips trembled. She tried to speak, but the icy pressure of the gun barrel cut off her breath. "Adrian... please... it wasn't my idea... Julian promised me—"

"Shut up," Adrian ordered quietly.

He flicked his gaze toward Julian Vance, who was standing frozen with his hands raised high in the air.

"Where is she, Julian?" Adrian asked.

"She’s at Saint Jude’s," Julian lied quickly, his voice shaking. "We haven't touched her, Adrian! I swear to God!"

Mason stepped forward, slapping a tablet down onto the table in front of Julian. "Don't lie to him, Vance. We intercepted the communications from your doctor ten minutes ago. Claire realized Saint Jude's was compromised three hours ago. She fled the hospital before your men could trap her. Where did she go?"

Julian swallowed hard, looking at the silent, deadly men surrounding him. "She... she went south. Toward the old industrial estate near Gary. She has a family property down there... a cottage by the marsh."

Adrian lowered the gun from Elena’s jaw, but before she could breathe a sigh of relief, he struck her across the face with the heavy steel frame of the weapon. She collapsed onto the floor with a cry of pain, clutching her bleeding cheek.

"Mason," Adrian said, turning his back on them. "Tie them up. Put them in the basement of Pier 14. If my wife or my daughter suffers so much as a single scratch tonight, feed them to the fish."

"Understood, Boss," Mason replied.

Adrian walked out into the rain, his mind focused on a single destination: the dark, lonely marshlands of Gary, Indiana.
