Chapter 6 - The Return to the Heights

Two weeks later.

The Chicago penthouse was no longer a silent, dark mausoleum of regret.

The floor-to-ceiling windows were pulled wide open, allowing the warm summer breeze and the bright sunlight from the lake to fill the massive living room. The heavy, dark furniture had been replaced with lighter, softer tones. The scent of rain and old whiskey had been replaced by the smell of baby lotion and fresh lilies.

In the center of the living room sat a modern, beautiful white crib.

Adrian walked into the room carrying a silver tray with tea and fresh pastries. He was wearing an unbuttoned white shirt and soft trousers, looking more relaxed and content than he had in twenty years.

Claire was sitting on the plush sofa near the window, wearing a comfortable silk robe, holding two-week-old Victoria against her shoulder, gently rocking her back and forth.

Adrian set the tray on the coffee table, sat down beside Claire, and wrapped his arm around her waist, pulling her close to his chest.

"She’s asleep," Claire whispered softly, looking down at the baby’s peaceful face.

"She takes after her mother," Adrian said, kissing Claire’s temple. "Strong, quiet, and completely unbothered by my existence."

Claire let out a soft laugh, resting her head against his collarbone. "You know, nine weeks ago, I sat on that very sofa convinced I would never see this penthouse again. I thought I was going to have to raise her alone in a small apartment somewhere in Canada."

Adrian’s grip on her waist tightened slightly. "I will spend the rest of my life making sure you never feel alone again, Claire. I failed you. I let my ego and my work blind me to the snakes around us."

Claire turned her face up to look at him, her dark eyes clear and loving. "You didn't fail me, Adrian. You came for us through a hurricane. You delivered our daughter with your own hands. You destroyed our enemies in a single day."

May you like

She reached up, resting her hand against his cheek.

"You proved who you really are when it mattered most."
