Chapter 4 - The Delivery in the Dark

Adrian lifted Claire into his arms, carrying her easily despite the weight of her advanced pregnancy. He kicked the door shut behind him with his boot, while Mason and Frank immediately reinforced the entryways, taking up defensive positions near the windows.
The cottage was freezing, illuminated only by three candles placed on a wooden dining table.
Adrian carried Claire into the small ground-floor bedroom, laying her down gently on the clean white sheets of the bed. Her skin was burning hot, but her hands were icy cold as she grabbed the lapels of his wet leather jacket, dragging him down until his face was inches from hers.
"Adrian," she gasped, her eyes wild with agony and fear. "The baby... she’s coming now... I couldn't stop it..."
"I'm here," Adrian said, kneeling beside the bed, throwing his wet coat onto the floor and cupping her damp cheek with both hands. "I'm right here, Claire. I'm not leaving you."
"They tried... they tried to take her..." Claire sobbed, a single tear finally escaping her dry, exhausted eyes—the tear she had refused to show him nine weeks ago at 2:17 a.m. "They were going to kill me in that hospital..."
"I know," Adrian whispered, his own eyes brimming with hot tears as he kissed her sweaty forehead again and again. "I found the nursery. I saw the boards. You were protecting her. You were protecting both of us, and I was too blind to see it."
A terrifying moan escaped Claire’s lips as another massive contraction hit her. Her grip on his hand was so tight he could hear his own joints cracking, but he didn't care. He would have let her break every bone in his hand if it eased her pain for a single second.
"Mason!" Adrian roared over his shoulder. "Where is the medical kit?!"
Mason rushed into the room carrying a large black emergency field-trauma bag. "I called Dr. Santos—our private physician. He’s stuck ten miles back due to a flooded bridge. He’s on the satellite phone right now!"
Mason put the phone on speaker and set it on the nightstand.
"Adrian?!" Dr. Santos’s voice came through the static-filled speaker. "Listen to me! If her blood pressure is spiking, you cannot wait for an ambulance! Is she fully dilated?!"
Adrian looked at Claire, his heart pounding in his throat like a trapped drum. He had managed shipping empires, directed gunfights, and faced down federal indictments without blinking, but the sheer, raw vulnerability of this moment terrified him to his core.
"Claire," Adrian said gently, looking into her eyes. "Can you do this with me?"
Claire looked at him through the haze of pain. The distant, cold wall she had built between them nine weeks ago shattered completely, revealing the fierce, maternal love that had kept her alive through nine weeks of hell.
"I can do it," she panted, nodding weakly. "Just... don't let them take her, Adrian."
"No one touches our daughter," Adrian vowed fiercely. "No one."
For the next forty-five minutes, inside the dark, candlelit cottage surrounded by marshland and rain, Adrian Vale ceased to be the feared mob boss of Chicago.
He became a midwife.
He followed Dr. Santos’s frantic instructions over the phone, using clean towels from the trauma bag, applying warm compresses, holding Claire’s back through every agonizing push, and wiping the sweat from her brow while whispering words of love and admiration he had neglected to say for years.
"Push, my love," Adrian begged, tears streaming down his face as he held her shoulders. "Push! I see her!"
With one final, earth-shattering cry that echoed through the small cottage, Claire pushed with every remaining drop of her strength.
At 4:03 a.m., the storm outside suddenly ceased its heavy thunder, leaving only the soft sound of rain tapping against the glass.
And then, a thin, sharp, beautiful sound broke the silence inside the room.
A baby’s cry.
Adrian held the tiny, squirming, blood-slicked bundle in his trembling, sterile-gloved hands. He carefully wrapped her in the warm blue-and-ivory knitted blanket Mason handed him—the blanket he had taken from the hidden nursery in his penthouse three hours ago.
He brought the baby to Claire’s chest.
Claire collapsed against the pillows, her chest heaving, tears pouring freely down her face as she looked down at the tiny girl resting against her heart. The baby had a tuft of dark hair and small, perfect fingers that immediately reached out and clamped around Adrian’s thumb.
"She’s perfect," Claire whispered, her voice cracking with pure emotion. "She’s perfect, Adrian."
Adrian sank to his knees beside the bed, resting his forehead against Claire’s shoulder, holding his wife and his newborn daughter in his broad arms, weeping silently into the dark night.

"Her name is Victoria," Adrian choked out, looking up at Claire. "Because she won."
Claire smiled through her tears, reaching out to touch his face. "We won."
