Chapter 5 - The Purge of Chicago

By eight o'clock the following morning, the storm had cleared, leaving a crisp, golden morning sun shining over the quiet marshland.
Dr. Santos had finally arrived with an armored medical transport, confirming that both Claire and baby Victoria were stable, healthy, and out of danger. Claire’s blood pressure had dropped back to safe levels the moment the delivery was finished, the immense physical and psychological strain of the conspiracy finally lifted from her shoulders.
Adrian stood on the porch of the cottage, watching the medical transport prepare for departure under heavy escort.
Mason walked up the steps, holding a secure satellite tablet.
"Claire and Victoria are being taken to the private medical compound in Wisconsin," Mason reported. "The facility is an underground bunker with twenty armed guards. They'll be completely safe there."
"Good," Adrian said. He wasn't wearing his wet clothes anymore; he had changed into a dark suit provided by his men. His face was stern, his gray eyes burning with quiet, absolute purpose. "And what about Cook County?"
Mason swiped the screen on his tablet. "Judge Evelyn Sterling just arrived at her chambers in the federal courthouse downtown. She believes the plan went smoothly and is preparing to sign the sealed emergency custody order granting guardianship to Elena Rostova."
Adrian took a deep breath of the damp morning air. "Call the Federal Bureau of Investigation."
Mason froze, surprised. "The FBI? Boss, we don't talk to the feds."
"We do today," Adrian said coldly. "Contact Special Agent Miller. Tell him I am handing him the largest judicial corruption scandal in Illinois history on a silver platter. I have the recordings from Claire’s hidden room, the bank transfer receipts linking Vance to Sterling’s offshore accounts, and the testimony of Julian Vance’s lead doctor."
"What about Julian and Elena?" Mason asked.
A dark, cruel smile touched the corners of Adrian’s lips. "Agent Miller will find them bound and gagged inside Judge Sterling’s private office at eleven o'clock today, right along with the sealed custody papers."
Two hours later, the downtown federal courthouse was rocked by a media earthquake.
Dozens of federal agents swarmed the building, placing Judge Evelyn Sterling in handcuffs in front of fifty news cameras as she was led out of her chambers. Minutes later, Julian Vance and Elena Rostova were dragged out in chains, charged with federal conspiracy, attempted kidnapping, judicial bribery, and murder for hire.
Adrian watched the news broadcast from the backseat of his SUV as he drove north toward Wisconsin.
