Chapter 6 - The Bloodline's Burden

By midnight, a snowstorm had fully engulfed Hawthorne Ridge, burying the roads under six inches of fresh powder and plunging the hospital into an isolated fortress.

Inside Room 212, the air was thick with unspoken truths.

Luciano sat in a high-backed vinyl chair in the corner of the room, his long legs crossed, his dark suit jacket draped over the armrest. He hadn't slept. His eyes remained fixed on the door, listening to every footstep in the corridor outside.

Kate turned onto her side, looking at him through the dim shadows.

"You should go home, Luciano," she said quietly. "Your men are outside. I can hear them walking the halls. You don't need to be here."

"I am not leaving," Luciano replied without looking at her.

"Why?" Kate asked, her voice trembling slightly. "Because of the papers? Because you need me to sign them so you can go back to your life?"

Luciano slowly turned his head to look at her. "The papers are sitting in the snow at Hawthorne Ridge. I don't give a damn about the papers right now."

"Then why are you here?"

"Because you're my wife," he said simply. "And the child in the NICU carries my blood."

Kate let out a faint, hollow laugh. "You're so sure now? Five hours ago, you looked at me like I was a traitor."

"I looked at the timing," Luciano corrected her softly. "Twenty-nine weeks. You kept it from me, Kate. You knew you were pregnant when I left for Europe."

Kate closed her eyes, tears leaking through her eyelashes. "I found out two days after you boarded that plane. I picked up the phone a hundred times to call you. But every time I heard your voice on the line, distant, surrounded by background noise and security reports... I realized what kind of life this child would have."

She opened her eyes, staring at him with desperate honesty.

"I didn't want my baby raised in a fortress, Luciano. I didn't want her first word to be 'armored car' or her first memory to be men with handguns standing outside her nursery door. I wanted her to have a normal life. In the mountains. Away from the Aruri legacy."

"There is no 'normal life' for an Aruri," Luciano said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, dark register. "You thought you could hide her in the mountains? Look around you, Kate. Julian Moretti's men are already outside this hospital. They trailed me here because they thought I was coming to sign divorce papers. If they find out there is a child..."

Kate went pale, her hand shooting to her throat. "They... they don't know, do they?"

"Not yet," Luciano said, rising from his chair and stepping toward the bed. "But they will soon. In my world, news travels fast. A weak link is an invitation for war."

He reached out, his warm, rough fingers gently grasping her chin, forcing her to look up into his dark, relentless eyes.

"So hear me carefully, Kate," Luciano whispered. "You wanted to protect her from my world. But right now, my world is the only thing standing between that baby and a bullet. You are coming back to Boston with me the moment she is stable enough to move."

May you like

"No..." Kate breathed, shaking her head. "I won't let you turn her into a bargaining chip!"

"She is not a bargaining chip!" Luciano growled, his grip on her chin tightening slightly before he released her. "She is my daughter. And I will burn this entire city to the ground before I let anyone hurt either of you."
