Chapter 9 - The Unbroken Vow

Three days later, the winter storm had cleared, leaving Hawthorne Ridge bathed in a bright, crisp morning sunlight.

The medical transport van stood waiting outside the main entrance of Saint Jude’s Hospital, surrounded by three black, armored SUVs bearing the Aruri family crest on their reinforced panels.

Inside the NICU, Kate sat in a wheelchair, holding a small, insulated travel incubator in her lap. Inside the clear plastic dome, her daughter—now named Clara—lay wrapped in a soft pink blanket, sleeping peacefully under the gentle hum of portable monitoring equipment. Clara’s vitals had stabilized enough for transport to a specialized pediatric facility in Boston, managed directly by the Aruri medical foundation.

Luciano stood beside the wheelchair, his hand resting protectively on the back of Kate’s seat.

Mrs. Gable walked over, handing a small leather bag to Kate. "Her medical files are all inside, my dear. She's a strong little girl. She has her father's stubbornness, I think."

Kate offered a faint smile, glancing up at Luciano. "Thank you, Mrs. Gable. For everything."

"Take care of her, Mr. Aruri," the midwife said, looking Luciano dead in the eye. "She needs peace now."

"She will have it," Luciano promised.

He pushed Kate’s wheelchair through the sliding glass doors into the cold, crisp air of the morning. His security team formed a tight, impenetrable perimeter around them, guiding them safely into the rear cabin of the armored van.

As the doors closed, sealing out the icy mountain wind, Kate looked down at the tiny baby sleeping in the portable incubator.

"Luciano?" she asked quietly.

"Yes?"

"Where are the divorce papers?"

Luciano reached into his inner jacket pocket. He pulled out the cream-colored legal document—wrinkled, stained at the edge with melted snow and dried blood from that fateful night.

He didn't say a word.

Instead, he took the document between his hands and deliberately tore it in half.

Then in quarters.

He rolled down the tinted window an inch and let the scraps of paper fly out into the freezing wind, scattering across the snow-covered asphalt of Hawthorne Ridge until they disappeared completely.

Kate watched him, her eyes wide, her chest rising and falling softly. "Luciano..."

"That marriage died seven months ago, Kate," Luciano said, looking at her with an intensity that made her heart skip a beat. "We aren't going back to that. If you stay with me, it’s a new life. No secrets. No walking away."

"And Julian Moretti?" she asked quietly.

"Julian Moretti is no longer a problem," Luciano replied, his voice calm, flat, and absolute.

Kate reached out, her fingers gently covering his scarred hand resting on the leather seat between them. "And Clara?"

May you like

Luciano looked down at the tiny child sleeping safely beneath the glass dome, then back at Kate.

"She will have the world," he said softly.
