Chapter 7 - The Silent Siege

At 3:00 AM, the emergency generator in the basement bumped to life with a low, vibrating hum.

The main power grid for Hawthorne Ridge had failed under the weight of the ice storm. The hospital corridors flickered briefly before dimming into a pale, eerie emergency red.

Luciano stood up instantly, his hand dropping to his side.

A faint knock sounded at the door of Room 212.

Marco stepped inside, his dark coat slick with melting snow, his expression grim. He gestured for Luciano to step into the hallway.

Luciano stepped out, locking the door behind him. "What is it?"

"Two vehicles just pulled into the lower parking lot," Marco reported in a low whisper. "Unmarked SUVs. Five men got out, carrying heavy gear. They aren't hospital staff, Luciano."

"Moretti?"

"Looks like it," Marco nodded. "They cut the power lines on the north side of the building before the emergency generators kicked in. They're moving up the utility stairwell right now."

Luciano’s eyes narrowed into slits. "They think I'm alone. They think this is a routine visit to settle a divorce."

"What do we do?" Marco asked, pulling a suppressed pistol from beneath his coat. "We have four guys on this floor, but if a fire fight breaks out in the NICU..."

"No shots near Pod 4," Luciano ordered, his voice cold as ice. "If a single bullet strays near the infant ward, I will flay every man involved alive. We intercept them in the stairwell."

"Understood."

Luciano turned back to Room 212, opening the door just enough to peek inside. Kate was watching him, her eyes wide with terror as she registered the red emergency lights and the tension in his posture.

"Luciano... what's happening?" she whispered.

"Stay in this room," Luciano commanded softly. "Lock the door behind me. Do not open it for anyone unless you hear my voice."

"Luciano, wait!" she called out, pushing herself up on her elbows. "Please... be careful."

Luciano looked at her for a split second, a rare, softer emotion flickering in the depths of his dark eyes before disappearing behind his icy mask. "Lock the door, Kate."

He closed the door, heard the heavy deadbolt click into place, and turned toward the stairwell.

The corridor was silent except for the steady, rhythmic hum of the oxygen machines. Luciano drew his Sig Sauer, pulling the slide back to chamber a round with a crisp, metallic click.

He moved down the hallway like a shadow, taking up position beside the heavy fire door leading to the central stairs. Marco and two other security guards lined up on the opposite wall, their weapons drawn and ready.

Below them, the heavy iron handle of the stairwell door began to turn.
