Chapter 8 - The Price of Blood

The fire door creaked open slowly, casting a long, distorted shadow across the red-lit floor tiles.
A tall man in a tactical jacket stepped through, holding a silenced pistol low at his side. Before he could raise his weapon to scan the corridor, Luciano stepped out from the recess of the door frame, wrapped his heavy forearm around the man's neck, and slammed his head violently against the concrete doorframe.
The man collapsed without making a sound.
Behind him, two more men burst through the doorway.
Gunfire erupted—not the loud, thunderous roar of unsuppressed weapons, but the sharp, deadly thwack-thwack of silenced rounds biting into drywall and linoleum.
Luciano fired twice, his shots precise and lethal, dropping the second attacker immediately. Marco lunged forward, tackling the third man to the ground, neutralizing him with a quick, brutal blow to the temple.
The encounter lasted less than forty seconds.
When the dust settled, four bodies lay motionless on the floor of the stairwell landing.
Luciano stood over them, breathing steadily, his face devoid of emotion. He kicked the side of the last man's shoe to confirm he was unconscious, then turned to Marco.
"Clear the lower floors," Luciano ordered. "Check every entrance. I want this building completely swept before sunrise."
"On it, boss," Marco said, signaling the other men to drag the bodies into the utility closet.
Luciano walked down the corridor toward the NICU. He stopped outside the glass partition of Pod 4, checking through the window. The tiny incubator remained undisturbed, the small heart rate monitor steadily displaying a green, rhythmic line.
She was safe.
He walked back to Room 212 and knocked three times—their old code from years ago when the family was at war.
Inside, he heard the deadbolt slide open.
When he stepped inside, Kate was standing near the foot of the bed, clutching an IV pole for support, her face white as a sheet. She looked at his hands, at the faint splatter of dark liquid on his white shirt cuff.
"It's over," Luciano said quietly, closing the door behind him.
Kate let out a long, ragged breath, her knees buckling beneath her. Luciano moved instantly, catching her before she hit the floor, lifting her into his arms, and laying her back onto the bed.
She didn't push him away this time.
Instead, her fingers clutched tightly at his lapels, burying her face into his chest as she sobbed silently.
"They came for me, didn't they?" she whispered against his shirt.
"They came because they thought I was vulnerable," Luciano corrected her softly, his hand resting gently against the back of her head, feeling the warmth of her hair. "They were wrong."
"I was so foolish," Kate cried, her tears soaking through his shirt. "I thought I could just walk away... that I could protect her by hiding. But I brought them right to her doorstep."
"You did what you thought was right to protect our daughter," Luciano said, the word our slipping from his lips naturally for the first time. "I don't blame you for that, Kate."
May you like
Kate pulled back slightly, looking up into his face. Her blue eyes were filled with raw vulnerability. "What happens now, Luciano?"
"Now," Luciano said, wiping a tear from her cheek with his thumb, "we go home. Together."
