Chapter 10 - The Sovereign

One year later.
The Valenti Estate was illuminated by thousands of fairy lights strung through the ancient oak trees in the gardens.
It was the evening of the annual Valenti Charitable Gala—a completely legitimate, high-society event attended by the governor, the mayor, international diplomats, and the wealthiest philanthropists in the country.
Hundreds of guests in tuxedos and evening gowns filled the grand ballroom, sipping champagne and celebrating the opening of the Russo-Valenti Children’s Hospital in Brooklyn.
Standing near the grand marble staircase, dressed in a breathtaking black velvet gown that hugged her full curves, was Elena Valenti.
She wore her dark hair swept up in an elegant style, held in place by a stunning diamond hairpin—a replica of the metal pin her father had given her mother, crafted in solid platinum and white diamonds. On her finger, the emerald-cut ring sparkled under the crystal chandeliers.
Beside her stood Luca, looking impossibly handsome in a black tuxedo, his hand resting possessively on the small of her back.
“Look at this room,” Luca whispered in her ear, his breath warm against her skin. “A room full of politicians and billionaires, all drinking our wine and praising your foundation.”
Elena smiled, taking a sip of sparkling water. “They praise us because our books are clean, my love. And because they know better than to cross us.”
Luca let out a soft, low laugh, pulling her slightly closer to his side. “You’ve corrupted me, Mrs. Valenti. I spend more time looking at quarterly financial reports now than I do looking at security manifests.”
“Good,” Elena teased gently, looking up at him with dark eyes full of love. “War is expensive, Luca. Peace pays much better dividends.”
Across the room, Dante made a subtle signal from the doorway, nodding respectfully toward Elena.
“Excuse me for a moment, darling,” Elena said softly. “I need to verify the auction receipts with the foundation treasurer.”
“Don't be long,” Luca murmured, kissing her cheek softly. “Every minute you’re away, this room loses its color.”
Elena walked gracefully through the crowded ballroom, greeting guests with warm smiles and perfect poise. She stepped into the quiet side corridor leading toward the executive office suite.
Standing near the coatroom door—the very same layout as the venue a year ago—stood a young, nervous man in a cheap suit, waiting for the facility manager. He was a low-level lobbyist who had recently tried to skim funds from the hospital construction grant.
When he saw Elena approaching, he straightened up, adjusting his tie, offering a condescending smile.
“Ah, Mrs. Valenti,” the lobbyist said smoothly, stepping into her path. “I was hoping to speak with your husband. We have a small disagreement regarding the audit line items for the Brooklyn project. I’m sure a woman like you wouldn't understand the complex contractual math involved—”
Elena stopped walking.
She didn't raise her voice. She didn't call for guards.
She simply looked at the man with dark, cool, unyielding eyes—the eyes of a woman who had survived a monster in a coatroom, dismantled an empire from a laptop, and built a legitimate sovereign kingdom alongside the most dangerous man in New York.
Elena pulled her leather tablet from her purse, swiped her finger across the screen, and turned it toward him.
“You took thirty-two thousand dollars from the cement allocation fund on Tuesday, Mr. Miller,” Elena said, her tone cold, precise, and utterly terrifying in its calm. “You routed it through an off-grid account in Newark.”
The lobbyist’s condescending smile vanished instantly, replaced by a look of sheer, paralyzing horror.
“I... I...” he stammered, his face turning pale as paper.
“You have until eight o'clock tomorrow morning to return those funds to the hospital account with interest,” Elena continued softly, stepping closer to him, her presence commanding the entire hallway. “If you do not... I won't tell my husband.”
The lobbyist blinked, confused. “You... you won't?”
Elena leaned in slightly, her voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper.
“No, Mr. Miller. I will personally audit every tax return, every property lease, and every bank account your family has owned for the last twenty years. I will freeze your assets, revoke your license, and leave you without a single penny to hire a lawyer.”
She smiled—a warm, breathtakingly beautiful smile that made the man’s blood run completely cold.
“Have a wonderful evening at the gala, Mr. Miller.”
She turned on her heel and walked back toward the ballroom, her black velvet dress trailing gracefully across the marble floor.
When she reached the ballroom entrance, Luca was waiting for her, holding two glasses of champagne. He looked at her flushed cheeks and the sharp, brilliant spark in her eyes.
“Everything handled, my queen?” Luca asked softly, handing her a glass.
Elena took the glass, clinking it gently against his.

“Everything is balanced, Luca,” Elena said, looking up into his eyes with absolute love and supreme confidence. “The ledger is clean.”
Luca smiled, wrapping his arm around her waist as they walked back into the shining lights of their empire together—unshakeable, unmatchable, and completely sovereign.
