Chapter 6 - The Calm Before the Storm

By two in the afternoon, the estate was a fortress.
Armed men in dark suits walked the perimeter, hidden behind the high stone walls and manicured hedges. Precision shooters were stationed in the upper gables of the mansion, their high-powered rifles trained on the long iron driveway.
Inside the master suite, Elena stood near the floor-to-ceiling windows, watching the gray clouds drift over the Hudson River.
She wore a tailored charcoal suit—crisp, professional, and immaculate. Around her neck hung a simple silver chain, a gift Luca had left on her vanity an hour ago, carrying a small, solid steel pendant shaped like a key.
A quiet knock sounded at the door, and Luca stepped inside.
He had removed his jacket, his white shirt sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing the dark leather shoulder holster holding his heavy automatic pistol.
“Caroline and Leo are safe in the upstate safe house,” Luca said, walking over to stand beside her. “Matteo confirmed they arrived an hour ago. Leo is currently swimming in the indoor pool, completely oblivious to Manhattan.”
Elena let out a long, quiet breath, resting her head lightly against Luca’s shoulder. “Thank you, Luca.”
Luca wrapped an arm around her waist, pulling her flush against his side. The warmth of his body was a powerful anchor amidst the rising tension of the day.
“You don't need to thank me, Elena,” Luca said softly, his lips brushing against her hair. “Protecting you and yours is no longer a professional duty. It’s my life’s sole priority.”
Elena looked up into his face, seeing the raw, unvarnished devotion in his dark eyes. The powerful mafia boss, feared by the entire city, was looking at her as if she were the center of his universe.
“I was so afraid last night,” Elena whispered softly, her hand reaching up to rest against his chest, feeling the steady, powerful rhythm of his heart. “When Shaw held me... I thought I would never see you again.”
Luca’s arm tightened around her waist, his hand sliding up her back to cup the nape of her neck.
“I felt it too,” Luca confessed, his voice dropping to a rough, low whisper. “When I walked into this room and saw blood on your dress... my heart stopped, Elena. I have faced death a hundred times, but the thought of losing you made me feel completely powerless.”
He lowered his head, his dark eyes searching hers.
“I spent two years pretending you were just my accountant,” Luca murmured, his thumb gently tracing her lower lip. “I told myself I kept you close because you were brilliant. Because you were good for business.”
“And now?” Elena whispered, her breath hitching as his face moved closer.
“Now,” Luca breathed, his lips inches from hers, “I know I kept you close because I am completely, irrevocably in love with you.”
Elena didn't answer with words. She raised herself on her tiptoes, wrapping her arms around his neck, and brought her lips up to meet his in a deep, desperate, overwhelming kiss.
Luca groaned softly, pulling her tight against his broad chest, his hands tangled in her soft hair as he kissed her with all the pent-up passion he had restrained for two long years. The world outside—the impending war, the armed men, the falling rain—vanished into nothingness. There was only Luca, her shield and her love, holding her as if she were the most precious treasure on earth.
When they finally broke apart, both gasping for air, Luca rested his forehead against hers, his eyes dark with fierce promises.
“No one touches you again, Elena,” he swore softly. “Not Mercer. Not anyone. I will burn this city to the ground before I let anyone hurt you.”
Before Elena could answer, the radio on Luca’s belt crackled with Dante’s urgent voice:
“Boss! Mercer’s vehicles just rammed the front gates. We have three armored SUVs in the driveway!”
Luca’s expression instantly turned to stone. He smoothed Elena’s hair back gently, kissed her forehead, and pulled his pistol from his holster.
“Stay in the inner safe room, Elena,” Luca ordered softly.
Elena looked at him, her eyes steady and unfearful. She reached into her suit pocket and pulled out a sleek, compact black revolver Luca’s men had given her earlier.
“I’m coming with you to the security suite,” Elena said firmly. “I have Mercer’s financial feeds live on my monitor. I can track his movements through his vehicle transponders.”

Luca looked at the gun in her hand, then at the fierce determination in her eyes, and let out a dark, proud laugh.
“Then let’s go finish this, my love.”
